What's new

Sri Lanka Buddhist monks demand halal boycott.

They should call for ban of all meat, eggs and animal products except dairy-derived. If Sri Lanka is proud of its Buddhist heritage and calls itself a Buddhist nation, you should follow in the footsteps of the Buddha who was pure vegetarian. Karmically and physically it is good for you. No pig meat, no cow meat, no halal meat, no haram meat, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, all will be happy. Even the Christian spiritual practices involve bread and wine, no meat is essential for them.

Come on Sri Lanka think about it, you can be the first truly vegetarian nation in the world :coffee:. At least since the kingdoms of Vedic times or before Abrahamic religions entered this region.

Sri Lanka is not a Buddhist country,It's a multi religious multi ethnic socierty,There is a clear seperation of religion and state in our constitution..Though the majority of the population are considerd followers of the faith,In Buddhism there is no restriction on consumption of meat..And vast majority of Buddhist's are not vegetarians

Few radical actions by some fringe groups does not constitude reality on the ground

So, Buddhist fringe groups target Muslims, and the Indians on this forum immediately start blaming Muslims for the tension.

Is Islamic radicalization seen as a threat in Srilanka??

Govt. of Srlanka should make sure the society of its country not to be polarized by these Islamic radicals.

Whatever the reason is, it can attract so called defender of Islam to your country. Be careful. Post-2014, these defenders of Islam may target you too as they will be looking for jobs.

And that's just the first page...

Buddhists are against the Muslim clerics that are distributing halal certificate and even forcing people to buy it which is not even legal.

Read the news first,

He urged Sri Lanka's non-Muslim majority to boycott any product with the halal label and asked the government to outlaw Islamic clerics issuing such certification.

While not condoning these militant groups for espousing hatred..There also need to be a national debate on the validity of private organisations hijacking religious rights for monetory gain..And if those said organisations are engaged in unethical practices on the behest of certain countries known to spread achaic tribal traditions in guise of Islam

Spare me!

The first page says it all. The Sri Lankan poster mentioned fringe Buddhist groups attacking Muslims and your guys' IMMEDIATE reaction was to try and blame it on Islamic radicals.

There are lot of incidents done by this Islamic radical groups in Srilanka in the past and are continuing their activities. Check the recent history and comment.

Commendable. As long as it is applied fairly and equally across the board to all religious groups engaged in such activities.

Yes we are Islamophobic. Sorry for using that patented word, now you have nothing more to say.

Nobody has said anything against Muslims but against radicals. We get our share, pakistan gets their share. No need to carry that chip on the shoulder all day long.

Did we support Buddhists fringe group. There are extremists in all section of society. Hindu extremists deliver similar response when Muslim extremist make such acts.

Our point is that it is a reactionary measure taken by these Buddhists fringe group over illegal activity by these Islamic clerics.

And another example is EDL in UK started as Reactionary organization, a fringe group against Muslims in UK asking for Sharia and calling for beheading of British soldiers in open.

Both groups are counter-productive for society and threat to social stability and harmony.

Without a doubt.. I think it's also a failure of the authorities to curb such groups/organisations from the start..On any side of the spectrum..We need to acknowlege this particular groups of monks are a reactionary force not a proactive one..civil socerty leaders from both communities need to sort this out to be fair on all sides before it gets explosive

Sure. Given the history of Hindu fanatics and the LTTE, it should be open season to hunt down Hindus in Sri Lanka, eh?

The only chip on display here is your guys' obsession with Muslims -- not just radicals, but all Muslims.

Every extremist group claims it is only reacting to provocation by the other side. Your defence of Hindutva extremists is predictable and comical.

So, in the decades long saga between Hindus and Buddhists in Sri Lanka, which side was the instigator and which side was merely "reacting"?

Why are you assuming that me calling these fringe organizations reactionary means I support them ? I don't support any kind of extremists who deliver hate speeches, forces their religion and wants people to live according to them.

Doesn't matter if they are Hindu, Muslims or Buddhists.

My entire point of "reactionary" is to define what is the type of organization based on their origin. Don't take it otherwise.

India has left that route and is going diplomatic , you can rant what ever you want
