Public outburst against paid & corrupt Indian Media: NDTV

NDTV-ICICI loan chicanery saved Roys

NDTV Limited and associate companies in which Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy have a majority stake have indulged in financial misdemeanours and malpractices in connivance with ICICI Bank, and raised funds by misdeclaration of the value of shares in NDTV. These shares were held by a company called RRPR Holding Private Limited. The deal took place between July and October 2008 during a "buyback" of shares from the stock market announced by NDTV Limited at the price of Rs 439 per share.

Share prices were in a period of boom at the time, and the company expected prices to rise even further. This is why it wanted to buy the shares back. Since the company did not have sufficient liquid funds to finance this purchase of shares, it took a loan from India Bulls Financial Services of Rs 363 crores, pledging 90,70,297 NDTV shares. This was in July 2008.

In August 2008, the stock market collapsed on the back of the subprime crisis in USA; the index crashed from about 22,000 to below 10,000. The price of NDTV shares went down from a high of Rs 394 to around Rs 100.

The collateral of the India Bulls loan, therefore, depreciated, compelling India Bulls to recall the loan. NDTV did not have the money to do so. They approached ICICI Bank to lend them money. ICICI gave a loan of Rs 375 crores in October 2008 against the collateral of 47,41,721 shares held by RRPR, at an average price of Rs 439, representing a gross value of Rs 208 cr.

This was the first financial malfeasance, since the worth of the collateral was far less than the amount given. This was further compounded by what can only be described as financial chicanery, since the price of the shares given as collateral was not Rs 439 but was actually Rs 99 in the market, as of 23 October 2008. The gross value of the collateral was only Rs 46.94 crores, or one-eighth of the loan given. ICICI, a publicly traded company in which the government and its institutions have a substantial stake, therefore accepted a lie purveyed by Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy, the only two shareholders in RRPR. It is also important to note that RRPR did not own a single NDTV share before July 2008, authorised and subscribed capital of a mere Rs 1 lakh.

Shockingly, just days after the disbursal of the monies, one of the directors of RRPR Holding [there were only two directors, the husband-wife team of Roys], was granted an interest-free loan of Rs 73.91 crores from the funds that had suddenly come into this inert company through the ICICI loan. The ICICI loan was an open violation of the SARFAESI Act of 2002.

The Ministry of Corporate Affairs, who received the necessary intimations of all transactions, gave implicit acquiescence of the transaction by choosing to remain silent. RBI, which had also received this information, also kept quiet.

To put this malfeasance in context, last month CBI arrested eight senior managers of LIC and other banks for a loan scam amounting to Rs 2000 crores in multiple transactions. NDTV has been a frequent borrower abroad, and also selling stakes in subsidiaries abroad and repurchasing these shares through various interested parties at prices that have no relationship to actual market values. For instance, NDTV Imagine [now sold] shares representing a face value of Rs 10, were sold at Rs 776. The benefit of such high premium obtained by these shares has not reached the Indian investors in the company. NDTV shares, on the other hand, are slipping even further, and losses rising. Its business overseas is through subsidiaries, which conduct financial dealings through accommodation addresses; one is 90 High Holborn, London.

There was a mass outcry against Barkha Dutt at India Gate recently, when she was about to host a show on the Lokpal Bill.

I even cant explain how relaxed im feeling hearing all this................ i never liked her n reporting and strated even hating more.... im just loving it - JANTA MEIN HAI DUM.

Burkha Dutt, This who was responsible for getting our soldiers killed during Kargil War by showing their positions on TV.

The same woman who once hosted a show, whether Kashmir should get Independence. Her guests were Kashmiri separatists and the entire audience was specifically brought in from Srinagar and Baramulla. She asked for a poll whether Kashmir should get independence from India and 97% say Yes. And this says that it is India's Opinion that Kashmir should be given Independence.
The Congress Govt condemed it just like Arundhati Roy's speech with Geelani, but those Crapasses Despite Her Anti National activities did not take action.. .

Some of the comments here are way over the top. It's pretty clear that most of you don't like Barkha Dutt (I'm not a fan either) but the way most of you guys go on & on about her is ridiculous. Whether she is guilty of ethical violations is a call only her employers can take which would result in immediate consequences. You guys can make that call too though considering most of your political & social affiliations it is not difficult to fathom that you most likely didn't require the excuse of the Nira Radia tapes to come to your conclusions. You could just tune in to another channel & stop whining about NDTV & Barkha Dutt. You have little or no right to insist that Barkha Dutt be taken off or jailed ( a preposterous suggestion only by the legally blind).

As far as her being in contact with Nira Radia, that would be her job. She isn't being paid mega bucks to find out about the news after it appears in the next day's papers. The case against her is qualitatively different than that against Vir Sanghvi (liked him actually) who was guilty of doctoring his column according to instructions something that is only done for a large enough pay off. There is no indications that Barkha Dutt received any monitory consideration except maybe more internal gossip which btw is the life blood of a journalist.

Another thing that keeps cropping up is her supposed use of a satellite phone during the Kargil war which gave away the position of an artillery gun resulting in casualties when Pakistanis opened fire at that position. Even if this were true, the blame should be levied at the Indian army handlers (if any) for allowing such an incident to happen. Too much to expect that a journalist should know that. A second incident during the Mumbai attacks was more serious & showed both stupidity & recklessness on her part. She deserves all the blame that came her way on that incident. Also her explanation on the NDTV program on the Nira Radia issue was a unmitigated disaster. She convinced no one & came out looking unrepentant & likely making the assumption that her audience are stupid ( probably correctly) to believe any crap she put out. Easier to have been straight forward & said that she passed on messages ( not a crime in itself) instead of a cooking up a story that could not be believed except by the most gullible. She btw is paying the price for her mistake; you won't see her at the anti-corruption rallies( the biggest story of last week) because her own image is in tatters. The reaction of the crowd in the video prove that she is still paying the price & she probably will for a very long time.

Basically all media particularly electronic media needs serious course correction.

Watch Loksabh TV. I think it is the most anti-govt news channel.

Regarding paid channel, as NDTV is supporting Congress, CNN-IBN also worked with BJP to create a drama to destabilize the Govt.

Now that is the single most ridiculous thing I have heard in a long long time. CNN-IBN is much more pro-Congress than NDTV ever was.

hindi ndtv is the best channel in india.........particularly vinod dua live.......and zayka india ka......indias bad image is becoze of india tv......they are the who alwys hype against china and pakistan......one day there was news on this channel that oriental bank of commerce is suppling jali currency.....on next day when i visited bank on every they post a stamp "india tv jutha tv".......

I don't wanna debate on who is pro-Congress or who is pro- BJP.
But this is not just media. Indian media is corporate world now. They have their camps. They have groupism. Barkha Dutt was among a few who got Jouranalism with Corruption... She was a good journalist.
Like they say in hindi
''चोरी तो सब कर्ते हैं,
जो पकडा जाता है,
वो चोर होता है''

And frankly Indian Media as whole recieves a thumbs down from my side... If anyone got an objection just watch IndiaTV...

They have presented at times their best but all is vain...

So where do you guys get your daily news from? We have already established that both print media as well as TV news is a bunch of bullcr*p. Where do you find unbiased sources of news?
