Construction on third airport terminal begins next year

Construction work on the third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport will begin in April next year.
Civil Aviation Authority, Bangladesh (CAAB) signed an agreement in this regard with four companies at CAAB headquarters on Sunday.

CAAB Chairman Air Vice Marshal Ehsanul Gani Choudhury, Japan International Consulting Operation Nippon Co Ltd acting Vice Chairman Haruhiko Kanai, Japan Oriental Consultants Global Limited Vice President Jun Yamauchi, Singapore CPG Consultant Ltd Executive Vice President Rohain Binte Baharin and Bangladesh Design Consultant Ltd’s AKM Rafiquddin have signed on behalf of their respective companies.

Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon was present at the event.

The project cost has been fixed at Tk. 13,610.46 crore.

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will finance the construction. The project’s soft opening will be held in December 2019 while the total construction work is expected to be completed in April 2021.

Rashed Khan Menon said that the airport currently has the capacity to handle eight million passengers and a cargo load of 200,000 tonnes in a year.

“The cargo handling capacity limit of Shahjalal airport has already been reached. At the same time, the passenger handling capacity will reach its limit in 2018,” he said.

“After the third terminal project is completed, airport authorities will be able to handle 20 million passengers a year and the cargo capacity would climb to 500,000 tonnes a year,” he added.

Just wanted to ask one thing with no offense. Why Dhaka doesn't give a mega city looks? I means even Karachi if u see pictures with no govt focus or even Islamabad gives an international mega city looks with recently tall high rises in Karachi it has really started to look a big mega city. Imo I think Dhaka need more tall buildings then any other country considering small land and big population.

Dhaka sits on alluvial soil like the most of Bangladesh. The alluvial soil is over 80-100 meters deep (great for growing food) but makes it very difficult to build large structures like mega tall building as you need to dig down pillings to the bedrock (80-100 meters down). On top of that land prices are among some of the highest in the world and very scarce. This all means to build a megatall building would cost 70% - 150% more then other regions.

So building the same 400m and above building would cost more then twice in Dhaka then it would cost in Karachi. We own 2 (16+ floors) buildings in Dhaka (leased to local banks) and planning to build 1 more in 2020.

Midrise architecture in Bangladesh is really interesting and intriguing, specially like the use of fair face concrete(left unpainted), big terraces and galleries in apartments, open end plans, ceiling to floor big windows and the planning for light and air in the apartments...

I generally don't like bright colored green and blue glass cladding all over the elevation, unless in some office buildings. Terraces and galleries are more important in condo's and apartments than anything else.
