Iran's "The Salesman," a drama about honor and revenge in a modern marriage, won the Oscar on Sunday for best foreign language film.
The movie, directed by Tehran-based Asghar Farhadi, marked Iran's second Oscar victory, coming five years after Farhadi's drama "A Separation" won the nation's first Academy Award.
"The Salesman" was seen as one of the favorites in the foreign language category after winning prizes at the Cannes Film Festival last year, and its win follows the fallout over U.S. President Donald Trump's crackdown on foreign travelers.

Farhadi, and the film's lead actress, Taraneh Alidoosti, both said last month they would boycott the Oscars to protest Trump's ban on travel to the United States from seven majority Muslim nations, including Iran.
The ban was later overturned by U.S. courts but the administration is working on a new executive travel order.

Farhadi chose two Iranian-Americans -- a female engineer and a former NASA scientist -- to represent him at the Oscars ceremony.
Anousheh Ansari, an engineer who was the first female space tourist, read a statement on behalf of Farhadi.
"My absence is out of respect for the people of my country and those of other six nations whom have been disrespected by the inhumane law that bans entry of immigrants to the U.S.," Ansari said, in reading from Farhadi's statement.
"Dividing the world into the 'us' and 'our enemies' categories creates fear, a deceitful justification for aggression and war."

"The Salesman" tells the story of a quiet married couple whose relationship is pushed to the brink after the wife is attacked while alone in their Tehran apartment, and the husband goes to extreme lengths to seek revenge.

At the same time, the couple is appearing in a local production of Arthur Miller's play "Death of a Salesman," and elements of the work mirror their fraught lives.

I don't know why they call Ms Anousheh Ansari a space tourist?

She was an astronaut and an engineer for the space flight.

Congratulations to Iran for winning such a prestigious award, I will surely watch this film.
100% better than Bollywood:D:tup:

Seems like an interesting movie, I've been wanting to watch that one for a while now.
it wouldn't win the prize if the movie wouldn't insult the Iranian.

Hmmm..... Guess Chinese, Indian , Pakistani and other members here who were saying they can't wait to watch this movie should refrain from doing so then, since it's not a good movie for Iran's image, so watching it will only encourage many more such movies.

But then again, guess that's also why U.S, western countries dominate the world movie and cultural industry since they are far more open to self criticism and towards movies that even portrays the bad aspects of their government. For example popular series like Homeland (especially the latest season), House of cards, or British shows like madog etc.
So not every movie has to toe the government line or be all merry merry about the country bad aspects can also be included

They dominate the movie industry because of heavy investments.
portraying bad aspects, really? you mean they show themselves as the warmongers who killed one million people in Iraq and Afghanistan? the cause of 40 times increase of narcotic drugs in Afghanistan, the founder of ISIS and Al-Qaeda? can you please give me the name of these movies?!
if they produce one movie which has a small criticism, they produce another heavily invested hundred to cover that one movie. it's totally different than constantly producing movies which portrays a negative image of Iran, what people like Farhadi and some other Iranian directors do in their foreign invested movies.

Mike, Hollywood is looked down at in Iran for promoting rabid Zionism. Muslims along with people of color have been consistently dehumanized for the last century. What else you want us to say.......become like toady saudi wahhabi's? who bend over on the drop of a dime for you boys?

Who says Hollywood is looked down in Iran ?
I bet more than 90% of Iranian prefer to watch an average Hollywood movie compared to an average Iranian movie.

The question is why no Iranian organization was willing to support the financial aspect of producing the movie.
