Afghanistan's National Army (ANA) soldiers walk at the site of a clash between insurgents and security forces at the Indian Consulate in Herat, Afghanistan on May 23, 2014

New Delhi: The Indian consulate in the Afghan city of Herat was attacked early Friday by four gunmen who tried to enter the complex and later fired from neighbouring buildings. All four were killed in an operation that lasted almost 10 hours.

The assault began at 3.35 am, when the gunmen reportedly opened fire on the consulate from a nearby house with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades. One of them was shot dead while he was trying to scale the wall of the consulate.

Two other attackers were reportedly surrounded by over 150 security personnel, including soldiers of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and shot. Nearly 10 hours later, the fourth man was also shot.

Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai called Indian Prime Minister-elect Narendra Modi, who thanked him for the work of the Afghan forces in rebutting the attackers. Mr Modi had earlier spoken to the Indian ambassador in Afghanistan and assured all help.

"I condemn the attack on our consulate in Herat, Afghanistan," Mr Modi tweeted. (Narendra Modi Speaks to Indian Ambassador to Afghanistan After Consulate Attack)

Pakistan has condemned the attack, which comes on a day Islamabad is expected to inform India whether Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will come for Mr Modi's swearing in as Prime Minister on Monday. (Nawaz Sharif at Modi's Swearing In? Pakistan's RSVP Today)

Afghan president Hamid Karzai has confirmed that he will attend the oath ceremony. (Read more...)

Herat, which lies near Afghanistan's border with Iran, is considered one of the safest cities in the country.

India has invested more than $2 billion in Afghan projects, including roads and power projects.

If not RPG then should have served briyani with sheer khorma? Nonsense!

Genius nobody uses an RPG in a CQB situation ...

army does not want, that is for sure. Bacha bacha knows that. You don't need a source. This attack is the biggest proof. Don't talk like a newbie. Every one understands.
Army may be delaying Nawaz Sharif’s India visit - The Economic Times

lmao... bs article by Dipanjan Roy Chaudhury ?

Bacha bacha know tht you guys blame everything on PA or ISI.. Grow up.

bwahahahah spare us of your Indian dramas man.

you frustrated Indians are still banking on this fire cracker for getting attention.

And oh nothing will happen if our PM visits India , it will NOT harm us ;) it will burn those extremist indians who thought Modi will drop Bomb on Pakistan ;)

So i say NS should visit India

Same logic applies for your extremists too. Only difference is your extremists act in advance to thwart the move.

Remember all the bombing that took place in past one decade.

2013---bombing against the Indian Consulate in Jalalabad ( border with Pakistan) --- nine people killed including six children.

2008 and 2009----Two attacks on the Indian Embassy in Kabul -- 75 people killed.

26/11(2008) in Mumbai -166 killed

and 1999 war in Kargil. Too many to list.

Please don't announce, just visit. It is us who suffer for your peace overtures.

Indian dream to make Afghanistan their ally or backyard will never see the light lol:sarcastic:. Let Americans leave Afghanistan and we will show you who will rule Afghanistan :sarcastic::sarcastic:

just like your strategic depth in controlling Afghanistan has backfired in the past and you are still seeing its effects for little less than two decades.

First of all SHAME to all Indian posters for blaming ISI for blaming these attacks on our consulate without proper evidence.

Secondly SHAME to all Pakistani posters for renouncing and appreciating this act of terror.

We have to get together to eradicate this terror from plant of earth which is taking form of world war 3, these petty different won't see any day light.

On topic: The 4 terrorist which tried to kill innocent people were sent packing to their own jannat, which we call HELL. Great job in neutralizing these terrorist Afgan Security and ITBP. This shows them that AFGAN is prepared for any misadventures from any terrorist attacks. GOOD JOB!!!

Us.

We do.

Bingo.

bingo again.

Proof, my dear?

Seriously?

Who controls and runs the TTP and the BLA?

Who? and what does that have to do with this attack?

The same that benefit from attacking all foreign presence, the Afghan taliban and anti-government forces.

Us too.

Bingo one again.

Show me a Taliban statement objecting to Indian presence.

Please, it takes two to tango. The moment you admit that this presence of yours is no good, you will have no need to ask us that.

Their presence is no good as per Pakistan - so bingo a fourth time too.

Er.

Let's see.

They claim to be fighting for Islam. Certain events and the plight of a certain group in certain areas of your country are no secret anywhere. They fight anything and everything that doesn't agree with their very narrow view of what Afghanistan should be ie; the taliban's Islamic Emarite of Afghanistan. Anything or anyone who is affiliated with the government in Kabul, including the Indian presence, is fair game. The Indians are known to be working with the ANA, in training and all sorts.

Want more?

Even Pakistan offered help in training the ANA, so I don't see any difference, India is there on humanitarian grounds, it irks Pakistan - not the taliban.

Besides, have the taliban or the haqqani's even claimed this attack? - which they almost always do - with sometimes even video evidence.

Indian dream? Wake up dude! Afghanistan is already our ally.

Who'll rule Afghanistan once the Americans leave? Obviously it would be the Afghans under President Abdullah Abdullah, of the erstwhile Northern Alliance, supported by India. Pakistan and their proxies, the Taliban (Haqqani/Omar), will be nowhere on the scene! :P

Hail to India-Afghan friendship!

Why?

Unlike in Pakistan, in India the security services work only for the civilian elected govt so are you saying Modi ordered this attack? Whilst it is conceivable this is ISI- they have done it in the past, it is hard to imagine it being RAW and that too attacking it's own consulate?

You Pakistanis really do live in your own fantasy world....

Pakistanis don't have a clue how to stop these attackers, who not only attack Indian assets but their civil and military assets. Unlike other planned attacks in 2008 and 2009 this is hastily done.

Let the Americans leave and you will see the true nature of Afghans. Get yourself a copy of Pashtoonwali, a lot of canned beans/daal, a ton of duas, and dig yourself a big hole. We are coming.
Afghans will rule Afghanistan, and we will not spare the backstabbers and dollar-lovers who sold us out in the past.
