Your body starts to change right after you quit smoking

Your body starts to change right after you quit smoking

From the canals of your ears to the intricate blood vessels of your circulatory system, smoking can harm almost every part of your body.

For those addicted to nicotine, giving up can be a daunting task and it is easy to feel that the damage has already been done.

But research shows that your body benefits just minutes after you draw a cigarette from your mouth and stub it out.

Here is a timeline of what happens to your body from the minute you stop smoking.

20 minutes

As you inhale, smoke and nicotine enter your bloodstream and the substance raises your blood pressure and heart rate. After you finish the cigarette, your heart rate and blood pressure return to normal.

8 hours

Carbon monoxide, the poisonous gas that kills over 40 people in the UK every year, if it seeps from faulty appliances in large quantities, is one of the 4,000 chemicals which enter your body when you smoke burning tobacco.

Nicotine and carbon monoxide start to leave your body and oxygen levels return to normal eight hours after you smoke.

24 hours

A day after your last cigarette, your lungs will begin to clear out the mucus and debris caused by smoking.

48 hours

Nicotine, a toxic liquid, is the chief active ingredient in tobacco and is highly addictive. Smoking also dulls your ability to smell and taste. Two days after you stop smoking, nicotine is eliminated from your body and your senses start to improve.

2 to 12 weeks

Smoking affects your blood circulation, making physical activity much more difficult. This, in turn, impacts your overall health. Stopping smoking makes exercise easier and improves breathing after a few weeks.

3 to 9 months

Months after you stop smoking, your health continues to improve. By this point, coughing, wheezing and breathing problems caused by the harmful chemicals in smoke are reduced as your lungs repair.

1 year

Smoking damages the lining of the arteries and causes fatty substances known as atheroma to narrow the arteries. This can cause heart attacks, strokes and angina. 12 months after you quit your risk of coronary heart disease is now half that of a smoker.

I used to smoke cigars in my younger days, a bad habit indeed but needed to cope with the stresses of a physics degree, yet it impacted my boxing career by diminishing my endurance, but managed to finally give up the little buggers, anyway on occasion after a lamb or chicken karahi and ice cold pepsi ,the desire to have one more light can become ever so strong.kudos zibago

A bad habit. Nobody else can help you with it but you yourself.

Seriously regrading the young Pakistani women who smoke, if they knew the how badly it ages their skin and destroys their looks they would give up in a heartbeat.

i suppose that is balanced by the fact of the fashionistas already looking shrivelled at 25 by doing gymming-shimming and all.

I remember as a young chap, I saw lovely Pakistani girl and smiled, she smiled back and then proceeded to chug on a cigarette and I was like , that just ruins things.

rightly said.

There were several smokers in my family, amongst the men and they all gave up.

This habit is dying in the developed world.

generally, the garbage thrown out by the western world is used by the apathetic middle classes in south asia and china.

but cigarettes are neither food nor sustenance/rejuvenator ( like tea ), so it shouldn't be so hard to ignore their presence... when your gathering has smokes you can have tea, just so that you don't feel left out and without the thought that your gathering is being wrong.

At the end of 2012 i made a new year resolution that i will quit smoking from 2013...eventually i managed to get rid of this Lanat at the end of 2013 without any help from doctor or medicine...7 years of chain smoking and wasting money, destroying health with my own hands. My breathing has improved drastically, i am able to work, walk, run without any exhaustion, i can concentrate on my work thousand times better.
Public places and offices have banned smoking so when i was habitual, it was simply a routine matter to stand outside the office just for the sake of smoking..now i realize how much time, money, energy i was wasting..in fact destroying simply for the sake of bad habit...!!! Smoking can destroy everything...please save your generations from this nasty thing..!

That's because your taste buds must have changed...smoking seriously effects your taste buds, chain smokers normally cannot enjoy different flavors of food items, so when they give up smoking there sense of taste magically gets improved, which very often cause them to eat more and more...so your weight gain must got the same reason.

27 months passed, Wonder what is the chances of a heart disease now?
It would be in a "zero meter" condition after 2 more years. Have a speedy walk for 40 odd minutes a day, and you will be fine like a horse.
