LONDON: International media on Thursday boycotted session with Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi at the “Defend Media Freedom” conference as was greeted by empty seats as journalists protested over ‘free speech concerns’ in Pakistan.

Qureshi, who is in the British capital on an official visit, attended the conference with journalists posting videos of a nearly deserted hall.

Qureshi was questioned about the censorship in Pakistan. “Believe you me, there is no question of gagging or controlling media,” he told the conference co-hosted by Britain and Canada. “That time has gone and with the new social media, the advent of social media, even if you want to gag you can gag nothing.”

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that Pakistan suffers from negative characterisation in western media, which is not reflective of the reality of Pakistani media. Amid rising questions about the issue of freedom of speech and recent actions takenagainst news channels by Pemra, Shah Mahmood Qureshi told the conference in London that Pakistan’s reality is overlooked by western media.

“I urge you not to be swayed by negative characterisation in international media about Pakistan, which tends to overlook Pakistan’s accomplishments in media and other areas,” said Qureshi.

He was repeatedly asked by journalists about concerns surrounding allegations by media and journalist organisation that there are increasing restrictions on media and that Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has taken harsh actions against TV channels recently for airing speeches of Maryam Nawaz without censoring.

Qureshi said close to 89 private TV channels were operating in Pakistan. "Three of them were taken off, I´m told for 6-8 hours, and now they are functioning again," he said.

He said the channels had "issues" with the regulatory body, adding: "Those issues have been settled." He said that Pakistan is more free, diverse and vibrant today than before and better than many developing worlds, freer than many other developing countries.

Qureshi denied that media was under restrictions, adding that there are certain rules, which must be followed by all. Qureshi said he always stood by democracy and freedom and continued to support the same values. Qureshi said he held Geo anchor Hamid Mir in high regard but said his interview with Asif Ali Zardari was not aired because the former president was interviewed when he was produced in the assembly from his cell and therefore he was not entitled to give his opinion.

The foreign minister was hackled by a Canadian journalist at the end of his speech. The journalist alleged that Pakistani government got his Twitter account shut down. In the video footage, which went viral, it can be seen that the Canadian man says: “You censored me, I had a Twitter account here [in Canada].”

“You sir should be ashamed, who are you to silence me in Canada… Answer? You don’t like free speech,” the journalist at the foreign minister. FM Qureshi responded by saying: “First of all you want your sentiments to be respected but look at the tone in which you are speaking… Is that the correct way?” The minister said that he did not block his Twitter account. “You have double standards and what you are propping up a certain sections agenda. I have been respectful to you.”

Piss off you little rat.

It is clear the International (badmashiya) establishment's panties are in twist with IK at the helm of Pakistan. They no longer got their men at the helm of Pakistan and hence making all these silly tantrums. The recent very clear message by state department that they are not aware of IK visit (how bloody convenient ) should leave no doubt in anyone mind that the likes of CIA and American deep state despise IK.

I don't even know why SMQ is there justifying anything. Its our internal matter if we muzzle the voice of our criminals/crooks.

We must be doing something right when "International Mafia" aka media is boycotting. So foreign agents are nabbed or about to be nabbed and then saviours comes to rescue through such tactics. Pakistan first is the concern here and these pressure tactics will be going to dustbin. So it was in UK, the same place where Indian Corporate uses unlimited money to manipulate some perception against Pakistan and this is not new.

Amidst reports of growing press censorship in Pakistan, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi was heckled by a Canadian journalist in London alleging that his social media account was suspended over complaints from the government, according to media reports.

Qureshi was attending a press conference on 'Defend Media Freedom' in London on Thursday when the incident took place, days after Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) suspended transmission of three private TV channels for airing an interview of jailed former President Asif Ali Zardari.

The move came as the Pakistan government decided to curtail the space given by the press to jailed politicians like Pakistan's former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Zardari.

Journalist Ezra Levant of the Rebel media, a Canadian far-right political website, interrupted and verbally assaulted the minister alleging that his Twitter account was suspended over complaints from the Pakistan government, the Dawn newspaper reported.

"That's exactly what I'm talking about. Twitter didn't delete my whole account. But they deleted a tweet they said violated Pakistani law. Twitter said that to me in an email. I'm in Canada. Twitter is in America. But Pakistan censored us," he tweeted.

In a video clip of the incident shared by Pakistan journalist Munizae Jahangir on Twitter, Levant said the organisers should be embarrassed to invite a "censorious thug" to talk about free speech.

Levant also accused the minister of adopting double standards on free speech, the report said.

Responding to the allegations, Qureshi said, "first of all you want your sentiments to be respected. Just look at the tone to the panel you have adopted. Is that the correct way? You have a right to ask questions."

"You have double standards what you call freedom; at times you are projecting certain agendas," the minister said.

Replying to a question on Pemra's recent decision to take three television channels off air, the arrest of journalists and deepening concerns about censorship, Qureshi said there was "no question of gagging" journalists.

"Believe you me, there is no question of gagging or controlling media," he told the conference co-hosted by Britain and Canada.

"That time has gone and with the new social media, the advent of social media, even if you want to gag you can gag nothing," he said.

Further explaining, Qureshi said that three news channels were taken off and "I'm told for 6-8 hours, and now they are functioning again."

He said the channels had "issues" with the regulatory body and "those issues have been settled."

Qureshi was also asked about an interview of Zardari, which was also abruptly taken off air.

Pemra had on July 1 taken off air an interview of the former president which was being conducted on the premises of the Parliament House, where Zardari came to attend a National Assembly session after the speaker issued his production order.

Qureshi said Zardari, who is currently facing corruption charges, was not permitted to be interviewed in the way he was, "otherwise he can say what he wants to".

The media curbs imposed by Pemra has been criticised by a media watchdog.

"This is an absolutely unacceptable violation of the principles of media pluralism and independence during a revelation that was clearly in the Pakistani public interest," said Daniel Bastard, head of Reporters Without Borders' Asia-Pacific desk, in a statement on Tuesday.

"We call on Prime Minister Imran Khan's civilian government to take immediate steps to ensure that cable transmission of the three TV channels is restored. The recent surge in sudden acts of media censorship is exposing the current regime's increasingly dictatorial nature," he said.
