World Bank: 27% of World's Poor Live in India

Why? I thought Pak was the sick man of South Asia? Wars, terrorism, political instability etc but still 'best'? How is this possible?

"Accumulated wealth" - Pakistan has had better GDP per capita than the other two for 60 years after independence
and so has had a lot of time to accumulate wealth.

Well this is somewhat true, but you will have to also consider that poverty reduction occurred in Pakistan mostly in Musharraf's era.. very late..

How about the stats don't show anything because most do not pay taxes. Meaning all the figures you get of Pakistan are like a speedometer that does not work properly. Your doing 100mph but it shows 30mph.

Similar in BD.

So much tax evasion going on - things should change soon as everything is starting to go online.
BD currently only collects 9-10% of GDP as tax. The average for S Asia is 15%.

In the example I gave. If your speedo showed 30mph but you were reaching destinations three times faster you would conclude it is giving flawed reading. I have concluded that the stats world bodies bandy about are wildly off the mark. But pen pushers like everything neat and tidy inside their offices even if the world outside bears little resemblence to what their numbers show. Apparently BD has twice the per capita of Tajikistan [$1750 to $800] but if you get the time look up Dushanbe and Dhaka. See if the numbers reflect the reality.

Apparently this city is twice poorer than Dhaka. Right !!!

How cities look is not a good way to judge per capita income.
Better way is to look at salaries.
Garments minimum wage in BD is 1100 US dollars a year.
Unskilled farm labourer in BD earns 7 dollars a day, which makes 15-1600 dollars a year.

Dhaka is a mess due to massive overpopulation. It will get a lot better in next 10 years as lots of infrastructure is being built and slums are being cleared.

What is? Numbers? What did I say about speedo?

Better way is to look at salaries.
So all those in Dhaka hide their salaries and like looking poor? The fact is [leave alone infra] the typical Tajik is better taken care off, better dressed, living in a better environment. But Dhaka has the numbers.

Wtf?

I have been around the world. The human eye and our ability to abstract around is great measure of poverty/wealth. You can't have a place where people look starved, many are pulling rickshaws like animals and live in hidious conditions but then claim "they be prosperous". Prosperity is not a number. It is condition of your life and living standard.

Like I say do not try to compare Dhaka with a Tajik city.
It looks pretty rubbish mainly due to overpopulation.

Other cities in BD all look better.

BD is in the middle of a massive economic boom and so has grown fast from very low per capita just 10 years ago and so has not had time to accumulate wealth yet. GDP per capita does not measure total wealth but just yearly production of wealth.

If you do not believe actual salaries that people get where GDP per capita is calculated from then there is no point discussing further.

You are trying to break down a very complex issue down to something simple and this just will not work.

You can see that even in UK. You drive to some inner city hood. You don't have to go and ask the locals their tax returns, bank balances and salaries. You can see these are deprived neighbourhoods with high crime rates. You see it and feel it.

Conversely you drive through some posh suburb you can see and feel the prosperity. You don't nee to knock on their doors and ask their salaries or tax returns etc.

Get my point? And if you don't the your just doing a ostrich on me and no point in me wasting my time.

As an example of how fast Dhaka is transforming itself, please see below:

https://www.asiatimes.com/2019/08/article/dhaka-in-a-development-vs-slum-rights-debate/

"Government should consider upgrading the city’s Karail slum community instead of summarily evicting its 200,000 people for a software park"

BD just wants to raze this place to the ground, like other slums, and build a software park in it's place - BD IT outsourcing has crossed 1 billion US dollars and is growing very fast.

My preference is to raze this ugly and unhygienic slum as long as the residents are given new accommodation as below:

New living conditions:

Current site of slum:

Dhaka is getting a Metro, Rapid Bus Transport Lines, Radial Ring Roads and other roads and clearance of slums. It will be transformed as per RSTP 2016-2035 Masterplan.

In nominal GDP per capita in USD, Bangladesh has already overtaken Pakistan. They might also have overtaken Pakistan in nominal GDP in USD when the latest figures come out.

That is indeed the case. But in terms of national wealth and economic size, Pakistan is still the second largest in South Asia. If trends don't improve then BD has a chance to overtake Pakistan in that department as well.
