New Delhi, July 10 — Amid China's increasing foray in this region, India will host its first dialogue with foreign ministers of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) countries next month that could see the formation of a summitlevel forum to expand ties between the two sides.

India will be hosting the first India-CELAC (Community of Latin American Countries) Foreign Ministers' Dialogue in New Delhi on Aug 7, M. Ganapathi, secretary (west) in the external affairs ministry said at a conclave, organised by the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) on the India-LAC relations.

External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna is expected to inaugurate the dialogue in which the foreign ministers of Chile, Cuba and Venezuela are expected to participate in the troika format.

Alluding to success of India-Africa summits, Ganapthi unveiled India's plans to accelerate engagement with this fast-growing region in the world.

"India's engagement with Africa has culminated in the setting up of the India-Africa Forum Summit mechanism. Our aim is to have a similar India-Latin America and Caribbean Dialogue Mechanism," he said.

Ahead of the foreign ministers' dialogue, India Tuesday made a strong pitch for overcoming "excuses of distance, poor connectivity and language constraints" to forge a multifaceted modern partnership with this region which is home to 60 million people living in over 40 nations.

"A concerted and cogent approach will be formulated to direct our attention and energy to this very important region with which we could naturally forge a productive partnership," said Ganapathi.

"The LAC region is often depicted as the last frontier for India due to geographical distance and our limited interaction in earlier decades. In recent years, however, this has been changing perceptibly as our interaction increases to encompass a wide range of issues," said ICWA director general Rajiv Bhatia.

The discovery of hydrocarbons has raised the profile of the the region and made it a hub of foreign investments. China has made deep inroads into the region both economically and diplomatically. It is against this backdrop India is seeking to scale up its economic engagement with the region.

India's bilateral trade has gone up from a mere US$ 2 billion in 2000 to $25 billion. However, India's trade with the region is only one-tenth of that of China's. India's investments in the region are estimated to be around $15 billion.

Currently, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jyotiraditya Scindia is in Cuba after having visited Colombia and Venezuela. Krishna visited Cuba last year.

India seeks to boost economic ties, investments in Cuba | Fox News Latino

Havana, Jun 16.- The foreign minister of India, S.M. Krishna, said his country wishes to increase investments and economic relations in Cuba, where he is on an official visit, local media said.

"Our political relations are excellent, but we must give greater economic content to those ties," the foreign minister of India, who arrived in Havana last Thursday, told the official news agency Prensa Latina in a statement.

Krishna mentioned the need for Indian companies to invest in Cuba and for organizations from the island to increase their presence in his country.

In that sense, he announced that India's commerce and industry minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, will travel to Cuba in July to "open new horizons" in bilateral economic cooperation.

"I'm really impressed by the things going on in Cuba," the Indian minister said on state television with regard to the process of economic reforms being promoted by the Raul Castro government to "modernize" Cuban socialism with measures such as the opening to the private sector.

Krishna made his statement after a meeting with the speaker of the National Assembly, Ricardo Alarcon.

The head of the Cuban parliament said on television that during the meeting they spoke "at length" about "the possibilities of greater participation by India in the efforts Cuba is making to adjust its economy."

Bilateral trade between India and Cuba reached its highest level in the 1980s when it topped $300 million annually. It currently stands at around $50 million a year.

According to official 2010 figures, the most recent available, in that year trade between the two countries reached some $54 million.

At present the principal ties between India and Cuba are being developed in the fields of sports, energy, biotechnology and information technology.

As part of his agenda in Havana, Krishna held official talks Friday with his Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodriguez and plans to meet with other authorities.

His program of activities also includes visits to places of historical and cultural interest. EFE

Chile, Cuba and Venezuela etc South America countries are very rich in natural resources.

All of these countries have per cap income far higher than India.

What SA countries need are mostly high quality industrial and consumer products with fair prices

which Made-in-China is the hottest offer in town.

I wonder what India produce in order to offer/lure South America communities.

Made-in-India fried curry takeaway to Offer Chile?

To export oil to Venezuela?

To convince Castro that "India is Shining"?

Indian Cigars for Cuba? Or Indian indoor pumping for Cuba?

Last time i Checked Cuba has very advanced health care...

or Bollywood mumbo jumbo?

Never heard of that Spanish cusine and Samba, Salsa etc Spanish dancing in SA are

far more superior and attractive?

And no, no magic call centres this time. Does S.M. Krishna even know that SA mainly speak Spanish?

So what is India can offer? To paint a magical red *** in the middle of SA people's faces and charge them for that?

Mind of a cook cant think beyond this.

Do you know that Cuba has more advanced health care than China ?? And Veneuzela has better per cap income than China ??
I know making chowmein takes most of your time. But find some time to brush cobwebs off your brain and your kitchen

.
compare SA countries and India, both have similar industry structure. both rely on export raw resources. What SA wants mostly India does not have an offer. What India sells the SA have the same. I find only one is for sure, SA export oil, India import oil. IT outsource does not fit for SA, they speak Spanish. India does not have a lot of Spanish speakers to meet them.

India trade with SA fell far behind China is obviously, there is nothing India can do.

Veneuzela is an oil export country with small population. higher GDP per capital is possible but that will not last long. within 5 years they will fell behind China. there is the list of growth of Veneuzela in the last 3 years. since international oil price tumbled, Veneuzela has 0% or negaive growth this year is not a surprise.

4.2% (2011 est.)
-1.5% (2010 est.)
-3.2% (2009 est.)
anyway,
Veneuzela has good relationship with China, they are on process to import weapons from China.

Cuba is a true communist country, it is far more communist than China. without a lot of industry, it was once the vacation heaven on earth. I admit Cuba is a very successful country can almost eliminate the poor and make average rich and happy. Cuba has everyone cover by health care plan and free education, the health care system is great. but I am not sure it has advance health care. at least its health care technology can not compare with China --- highend to higheng.
