Pinyin is just a romanized version of chinese, introduced abt 50 years ago. Chinese speak and write the Chinese way for thousand of years until this very day. This is only one chinese script.
In India, as if making English your national language is not shameful enough, Hindi is learned and written in former master script called Romanagari or romanized devanagari
400 million = 30% (older population) who speak local dialect but they write in the same chinese script.
Conversely, 70% speak Mandarin.
In India, only 40% speaks Hindi. In other words, 70% of the population don't speak HIndi. What's worse, they don't write in the same language script.
You even have more Indians speaking English than Hindi.
