Will East Asia ever be integrated?

. .
My first question would be is there an economic union in east Asia?
Not just integrated supply chains that span across two or three countries, but still subject to import duties, borders, in some cases homologation.....
One could maybe make a case that in terms of economic foreign policy east Asia is most aligned (mercantilism/export oriented)

In economic terms, yes. For example there is already an FTA between China and Korea, with Japan in participation in talks of a trilateral FTA.

There is a significant percent of the Diet that wish for further economic integration of Japan with China and Korea. The trick is balancing the relations with Washington.

I believe it can be done and Abe must be shrewd enough to maneuver around the stalks of hay, as the saying goes....

What if till now Japan is playing for China? When unification of East Asia happens, Japan switches side to China! The entire technological marvels of USA would be used against herself! (Japan will want to have a powerful CPC in China which could overpower the general chinese hatred and call for retribution against them) Same situation like that of Israel with S. Arabia and Egypt
USA will be destroyed from within!!
Lol!!! Think, may be possible!

@Oscar

You mean to say that you are alluding to the rebirth of the Greater East Asian Co Prosperity Sphere?

I don't know the answer to that. Japan is over 3000 years old, and as a civilization state that is older than the very concept of democracy or republicanism, She is outside the realm of total predictability. Japan will follow policies that will benefit the Japanese State.

I cannot speak for other Japanese, but as an individual , yes, I am in favor of a unified and totally integrated Greater East Asia; economically, politically, culturally and militarily. :)

Will that be realized in our lifetime? I don't know. But I believe that history will ultimately realize this.

. .
EU countries hold the same ideology .
No way in Asia countries.

In what aspect? The economic model within inter EU states is as different as the languages spoken in Europe.

If you actually read and study economic models implemented by Tokyo , Seoul, and Beijing, you will see that there is growing similarity. If not identical.

Politically , yes, there is difference. But political models vary and change from epoch to epoch in East Asia. East Asia is ....Ancient.

It is not just a problem of Asia countries.
Actually , China is working very hard to build Asia economic ecosphere , it is win-win situation.
USA is working very hard to make the TPP in order to isolate China. It is kind of WTO2.0 .
I do not think Japan and Korea can ignore USA's opinion. Remember the AIIB?

Mabye it's wishful thinking from your part @Nihonjin1051 , but whether it will materialize in the future (or perhaps beyond our lifetime) remains to be seen if we are still around to witness such an "historical" event. When addressing this union theme, we have to look at the following level: economically, politically and militarily.

There are issues among CN/SK/JP, the behavior towards WW2 by Japan isn't exactly helping as Japan often antagonize her neighbors with her vocabulary and actions. The North Korean "threat" is a factor we need to deal with occasionally from time to time. The unstable DPRK factor and Japan as being "occupied" by the US could easily make it impossible to have a NATO style for East Asia because of the American presence.

The question should be does China wish to have a military union among East Asia? :D

.
HIgh unlikely, when Japan keep defend US's interest against China and keep antagonize China geopolitically and economically, there is no commun interest on both to defend East Asia, a good example is AIIB, first due to US's pressure it couldn't join AIIB then it create an 110 billions infrastruture investment fund to rival AIIB, there is no such thing as China-Japan cooperation on international issue to defend Asia's interest beside knife throwing at each other. I think China will better on it's own, we have a sino-sphere which contain Taiwan, Singapore and over 60 millions oversea Chineses as a realm that lingustically and culturally compatible, our entire chinese population is more than Unions european combined.

Basically the US has Japan by her balls, the master tells her when to sit and when to stand. China was even so generous to offer Japan a special seat in AIIB and yet Japan refused.

It's OK that this idea of integration in everyone's mind,in reality just let it be unwillingly for we east Asian know what alien nations as a whole one we are surrounded by.
Japan had tried by itself 70 years ago and we all know what the result was.

The answer to this question is a flat "NO"

One reason is that other countries will use history as the basis of their foreign policy, and that will affect one country's relations with each other.

One can throw all their "soft power" to others, but it won't change anything.

And there are those who has a some sort of "historical vendetta" against other countries, in this case, Japan and what it did back in WW2; some may have moved on a few haven't.

Another factor is the economy of the countries - not everyone is in equal standing.

. .
We still need many years of integration before talking about union.
It is quite likely when China is powerful enough to lead the east Asia and southeast Asia..
Maybe 20 years..
