SC sets next week to hear Kalabagh Dam case

June 04, 2018

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court (SC) on Monday ordered to conduct hearings over Kalabagh Dam and water cases in the next week.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Mian Saqib Nisar said that the court will hear these cases on first priority as water scarcity is the biggest problem of the country. I have reopened 32-year-old cases, he added.

He also assured to hold proceedings over all such petitions and directed the claimants to get ready.

On September 16, 1991 the Council of Common Interest (CCI) had given a go-ahead to the dam in its sixth session. Interestingly, the then four provinces had approved and shown consent for construction.

In the ninth meeting of the CCI on May 9, 1998, the case was reviewed. Further interestingly both the sessions were held during former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s government. Despite the fact that CCI had greenlit the project, the case had to go to the court.

Lahore High Court (LHC) ordered federal government on November 29, 2012 to start construction. However, the governments in the past several tenures seem to have catered to political interests only.

In addition to the high courts (HC), the Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan was also approached in the matter as numerous pleas were filed from time to time.

Replies were also sought from the government but Kalabagh Dam remains in ink till date.

Pakistani nation are really living nation and they prove themself their concern via Hash Tag Dam social Media activity and I salute them all that brought their concern to SC notice. The government should stop listening to landowner Waderas, Chaudhris, and so-called Sardars and let's start the construction of Kalabagh Dam and other Dams (Soan,Diamer Basha,Akhori and Bhit) immediately to save the future of our children.

Dams have become more important than buying arms now. We are agricultural country, and without water, nothing can save us from our enemy.

Kalabagh dam issue is nothing but simply politics and to keep people busy.

Kalabagh dam become so controversial that it won't become reality in 30 years and probably not going for next 30 years so easiest way to keep people busy and do nothing.

If someone really interested than there are way better options available. Pakistan can go for many small dams, bhasha dam or even for soan dam which is six times bigger than kalabagh dam, produce much more electricity, can be made in similar cost and above all not controversial so work on it can be started anytime.
