Four editions on, the fifth edition in full swing, the questions and debates, of course, continue unabated. Is IPL good for cricket? Are the TV ratings falling or rising? Are the crowds dwindling? Is theretoo much glamour and less cricket? Is IPL succeeding? Will T20 replace Test cricket?
Oh ye of little faith - the answer is loud and clear. IPL is here and here to stay. Where else can you see the powerhouses Sehwag, Warner, Mahela, Pieterson and Ross Taylor combine to form a championship threatening combination for the Daredevils of Delhi! Where else can you see the old duo of Dravid and Ganguly inspire and lead young cricketerstowards amazing performances and last-ball victories! Where else can you seeeight out of the nine teams still in the hunt for a spot in the top four, in see-saw battles, after 18 days and 27 matches!
Six fours in an over from the young Ajinkya Rahane, five sixes in an over fromthe incredible Chris Gayle, a reverse sweep for a six from the bat of the super-talent De Villiers, all delivered at your doorstep within days of each other, only through IPL. Spice this up with Dhoni’s bottom-hand sixers, a scintillating century from the magical Pieterson, nail-biting, edge of the seat finishes and you have a winner through and through.
Have the IPL TV ratings dropped from last season? That may be so, but are they higher than most other programming on TV- that would be a big yes. Is the ad-booking percentage for IPL dropped from last year? That may be so, but are the media rates higher than last year andother comparable programming – that would be a big yes.
Who talks anymore if a Diya Mirza danced, or a Deepika Padukone did not, if a Preity Zinta appeared or a Shilpa Shetty disappeared? AB is not Amitabh Bachchanin the IPL world, but AB De Villiers. KKR is not SRK, but the Kolkatta Knight Riders cricket team. The IPL is now all about cricket, not even a controversial Commissioner.
IPL no longer needs its props, it is a stand-alone power machine, zooming away, and taking along with it, cricket as a whole, into the future. Lets face it, test cricket has its challenges. It is just not everyone’s cup-of-tea and certainly not, should we say, the cafe latte of the youth.Instead of seeing the interest in cricket asa sport wane, isn’t it time for the connoisseurs to appreciate that IPL and the T-20 format are the more commercialand exciting vehicles, that will ensure the sport of cricket lives long and lives well amongst the generation of future. Just so that the connoisseurs can actually sit back and enjoy their cup of tea over a gripping five-days for a long, long time to come.

'cause IPL is the future. Time will come where you won't have test or odi's between countries. it's goin to be shortened version of cricket played purely keeping commercial interest in mind. Even cricketers will be willing to sacrifice their own country for club. We have seen few who have done it already & those who were uptight at the start are now realising the need to play in IPL, likes of michael clark & stuart broad.

Being ardent test cricket fan, it's really sad to see it go that way. But that's the way it's going to go though...

the cricketers get famous by their ability to win matches in ODIs and tests, tests truly determine the talent and not T20s, all T20 stars come from ODIs,there are very rare cricketers which i even dont know get famous just by performing in T20s

india's IPLis just about givingpeople entertainment, its not about real cricket anyway,if it was, then the bollywood stars didnt have to make circus in the opening ceremony

even zimbabwe has defeated teams like australia in T20s,and more over T20s are way too fast for a bowler and batsman fitness, themore the T20s themore will be unfit p[layers

well as for players who left the tests, shane bond is an example who ruined his career by quitting tests, he isunfit, out of form and now he cant participate in IPL big bash etc

drop in IPL TRPis an indication enough that viewers are fed up with low quality cricket

IPL and Ttwenty is good but talks of replacing tests are stupid. I agree shorter versions of cricket are more exciting but they can't replace test.

Test is a true 'test' of cricketer. Test requires much more patience, accuracy, game plan, strategy, ability to cope with pressure and fitness. Ask any genuine cricketer they'll all choose test over any other fake formats of the cricket. Test is how the cricket was supposed to be played.

Any slogging idiot like Murali Vijay or Paul Valthaty can be a hero in t20 but they would fail miserably in tests.

If odis and T20s ever replaced Test. It would be such a shame for this brilliant game of Cricket.

let's be realistic. There used to be 5 match test series in the past between every test playing nations. Now it's only in the Ashes you get to see that. & it's only OZ & Eng which fills the stadium during test cricket.
It changes with generations. Once ODi came to the fore, test matches were cut down & ODI's used to fill the stadiums. Back then ODI was blamed by cricketers of yesteryears fro decline in standard & enthusiasm in test matches. Now it's t20. Just conclueded series between OZ & WI had only 2 test matches, where in 80s, 90s & even in early 2000s it used to 5 test series between them two nations. & that's what i'm trying to say.

Once again, being an ardent test cricket fan.. it's really sad to see cricket go that way!!

Cricket doesnt need IPL or the pajama game or the 20 20 whack a mole.

Cricket is a test match, the watered down versions for those with ADD that cant concetrate if there isnt a boundry every 30 seconds bears as much relationship to cricket as checkers with your little brother does to a grand master chess match.

IPL is to cricket what NBA is to basketball ,NFL is to american football , EPL is to English football and so on ... pros out weigh the cons , there is more to benefit than lose from IPL !!!

This IPL is a complete waste of time.

Only ICC sponsored T20 World cup should be allowed, all remaining local T20 tournaments should be stopped.

Complete waste of money.

when cricket must loss it's popularity for football in India? this game is a British baggage We are carrying. Football is the real fun.

AFAIK, states like Kerala,Goa are football crazy. during FIFA world cup time, every streets gets decorated with different teams flags.
