Why can't there be an IT and BPO boom in pakistan ?

For any business to nourish it needs a healthy evironment.
Current situation in Pakistan doesn't allow the IT or any foreign investment driven bussiness to sustain and develop.

Guess why IT companies refrain themselves from establishing their development centres in north India??
Educated society, absence of communal or any sort of violence and government policies make the South India much more ideal for such set ups.
Pakistan lacks those primary requirements.

Marketing will not help if you are using non-standard packages.

How on earth people will maintain their systems if the only one who can work on it has a name "Aurangzeb Alamgir" and sits in North Nazimabad's one room house?

Pakistanis "software developers" must be marketing Oracle or sAP based products. Simple marketing show-baazi won't help.

Thanks.

Pakistanis are more into software development han BPO. The local industry has been building its own software from the 60s rather than going out and buying from industry giants like Oracle, SAP.

What Pakistan lacks is good marketing about our capabilities but for those select few who know the Pakistani Industry would prefer it over other regions.

Agreed. This was discussed in post #7, issue number 1. That Pakistanis do not understand the value of keeping their "shop" clean, shiny, and free from rabid dogs with black turbans, and clear from the piles of religious and sectarian $hite.

The smaller software development setups are already building some very customizable setups. Perhaps Oracle Financials can be used by 100 industries, but a product made specifically for a single Industry would sell as well.

Oracle/SAP based products are not feasible for everyone either. In this recession who can afford buying a Single Server licence worth US$500,000 for an Oracle 11g database? Then there is the rest of the package. Its not for everybody. Which is why a lot of Pakistani companies do sell customized MS Dynamics based solutions due to the lesser costs.

Not Pakistan, I said individual Pakistani corporations. For example, Banks for a long time have built their own Banking Systems rather than depend upon an ERP or a Banking ERP.

But thats a typical milestone in an organizational maturity on the automation side. Most companies begin with home grown, customized software platforms (ah the age of Xbase and foxpro) before migrating to a more expensive ERP system..Most companies even in the USA began with home made custom ERPs before going for a industry standard Oracle Financial or Banking software kind of stuff..

Small type innovation are there everywhere in every country, but the necessity is to make it big, This can only happen if these people have global exposure. If you say that I am with happy limited resources, and better as isolated discoverer. its foolishness. To compete with big fishes, one need to dive in deep water. Get in pace with the world, learn from the world, teach the world and that's the way you can progress.

Asim was discussing his POV.

In Pakistan there are plenty of organizations using standard industry packages like Oracle.

Oracle certification is widely available too.

As I said in my post #7, our shop's back room /store room is very similar to India's. We have Basmati, textiles, and IT expertise. It is the front of the shop that needs HUGE improvements and then the Western customers will definitely come by. Heck there is a short flight or drive from Dilli to Lahore. There is even shorter flight from Dubai to Karachi (compared to the flights form Dubai to Bangalore or Bombay). So it is not the distance or talent, it is the condition of our "shop"'s front that has been made inaccessible due to the presence of rabid dogs with black turbons and heaps of Islamist garbage.

Thanks.

You are targeting small scale local clients. Here in India, despite Indian It services there is a very less business coming from local companies. Revenue coming from Indian cos is negligible though we have a huge industry base. The reason is unwillingness of small companies to invest in IT. They are fighting hard against big companies and where they can see themselves ahead is in their low cost products. That wont allow those companies to invest hugely in IT infra. Same would be with Pak industry. pakistan need to focus on international market and that could happen only when a healthy environment could be provided to foreign investors .

Well said.

Local Indi or Pak companies do not allow the margins that one can get from USA.

Even Chinese companies (if they ever come to Pak for IT outsourcing) will allow tiny tiny margins.

That's the why big profits can only come from stuff outsourced from USA and EU.

Thanks.

I'll tell you something funny more then half in KPK the business are either clothes, car tires businesses, car gadgets and stuff businesses or CNG and Patrol stations...

just noticed that your signature line is quoting 8:57 out of context. 8:57 should always be read along the verses before 8:57. Note especially 8:56 that qualifies 8:57 by saying "Those who make treaties of peace with you, and then repeatedly break those treaties". Only then 8:57 is applicable.

Didn't mean to change the direction of this thread. Just wanted to make sure people reading your posts do not misunderstand Quran.

Thanks.

I only pray to god that this foolish IT outsourcing industry and BPO boom never comes to Pakistan.
Its an immense waste of national talent and youth.
Do you want to see your genious youth become answering machines, data entry typist and generallty taking over the "white man's" dirty jobs.

Nobody wants to do these talentless "slave" jobs in USA and rest of civilized world hence they are outsourced to poorer countries like India. I call it slave jobs because that is what the job of a person employed at such position it..sitting in a miniscule cubile enter data or answering phones. No growth, no future, no innovation no consumption of talent.

Even the Indians now repent about giving free hand to western outsourcing industry which has not resulted in creation of any valuable technology pool or ToT but only transformed people with master degree into white man labor.

I'm not talking about startups, but companies netting in the hundreds of millions or more. Normally you won't see 50+ Developers working for companies whose main function is not IT in the west. Fundamentally its not the cost of these systems that keep Pakistanis companies away, but its the high demand on customization oh and also the enslavement culture that is usually expected out of IT staff.

Several organizations in Pakistan have huge IT departments that would benefit from going independent and slightly removed from the one organization umbrella. Unfortunately the type of resources needed can only be afforded by big corporations and their thinking with IT is to view them slightly better than how the Pharaohs viewed their slave labor building the Pyramids.

I'm definitely not stating that there is any sort of aversion to the big name products in Pakistan. After all even if you develop your own application, you need the backend databases like Oracle to support them. But you'll see just that, a lot of integration with their core in-house developed systems, rather than the other way round like Oracle HRMS rather than picking up everything from Oracle Financials. Taking the oracle example forward, Pakistan probably has a significantly high number of Oracle Form/Report Developers.

So even the stuff you do on your own is somehow or the other based upon technologies or platforms that are definitely compliant with standardized software.

dude are you out of your mind??
no one with even bachelors degree goes into a BPO...most of the people who work in BPO are some graduates of non technology course with good command over english...and most of them are college going kids who like to earn money for spending it on things they usually can not..
