The list is only about publications. For Saudi Arabia, I know that they hire a large number of foreign professors including south asia, middle east and the west. One of the reasons why they have a high publications list.

However, I think it would be only a matter of time when local Saudis start publishing papers independently as Saudi Arabia continues to be one of the largest spenders on education as a % of GDP. 2009 was around 7% if I remember correctly

Local Saudis seem uninterested in pursuing the highest levels of education, in my personal experience. My university has one of the most diverse student bodies in the World, and I've never come across a Saudi or an Emirati or an Omani in the Engineering or Science faculties (I think the Management/Commerce/Social Sciences departments would be the best place to look for them). I know people from all over the World; Pakistanis, Indians, Iranians, Sri Lankans, Palestinians, Egyptians, Labanese, Italians, French, South Americans, South Africans, Chinese, Korean etc. in Engineering, but I've never come across someone from the rich Gulf states. Therefore, I think it might be a while before we start seeing any serious contributions by Gulf Arabs in the Academics.

Other than that, you're quite right, Saudi Arabia is expanding its brainpower quite a bit. Professor Ted Sargent used to be quite a big-shot at my University (was a nanotechnology expert), but I hear he left our amazing research facilities to teach at a Saudi university recently. He must have gotten an amazing deal, why else would he abandon the best research university in Canada for a lecturing position in Saudi Arabia?

One last thing. It's no surprise Pakistan is not on the list above. Pakistan's contributions seem to be mostly in fields that fall under the "arts" category. Poetry, music, fine arts, writing etc. are great to have, but they're worth is diminished without equally matched academic and technological advancements. The majority of the time you see a Pakistani excel in the Sciences or in Engineering, he is in a foreign institution working for/with foreigners.

In many forums i raised the issue that all education purpose print media from India should be totally duty free...because i seen some very good authors on different subjects. For example an Indian friend gave me a very very simple book on Oracle databse, which was amazingly simple.

Well the trend of Saudis coming to the West might be decreasing but there are still plenty of Saudis coming to Australia and other eastern unis. One of the reasons is that the Saudi govt. pays for all the fees plus an extra "expenses allowance". But ofcourse the numbers compares to other countries is less.

KAUST is probably the uni that the professor you mentioned went too. It has some huge amount of packages and cutting edge research facilities. It also invites students from around the world on scholarships and is one of the few co-ed unis in Saudi Arabia

Muslims have the best brains in the world though! We just lack the proper leadership and systems!

We seriously need to give a much needed boost to our education system by collaborating with China. Those people have worked wonders in the area of raising the education level of their huge population. Now Chinese students and universities are close to or among the top in the world. If there is one place we should seek help from the Chinese, it should be regarding education collaboration. This will prove very beneficial and lucrative in the long run for Pakistan.

Pakistani Universities have some very good program structures. There's little work going on with high tech Science, but IT, Business and Engineering fields are quite challenging in Pakistani Universities.

Pakistani Education is cheap as well. Virtual University of Pakistan would grant you a fully accredited Bachelors and Masters Degrees for like $500 per year. Their course content is excellent.

I feel the real problem is in the high school system. Passing marks? 33%. Wth? That's passing? They goto Uni and by the time reach their masters they have to get a 80% passing mark which is normal.

Plus the cheating culture, the paper leaks. The schools where there are no teachers. It all piles up. It needs more regulation.

Why are they powerful?
So why are Muslims powerless? Here's another reason. We have lost the capacity to produce knowledge.
o In the entire Muslim World (57 Muslim Countries) there are only 500 universities.
o In USA alone, 5,758 universities
o In India alone, 8,407 universities
o Not one university in the entire Islamic World features in the Top 500 Ranking Universities of the World
o Literacy in the Christian World 90%
o Literacy in the Muslim World 40%
o 15 Christian majority-countries, literacy rate 100%
o Muslim majority - countries , None
o 98% in Christian countries completed primary
o Only 50% in Muslim countries completed primary.
o 40% in Christian countries attended university
o In Muslim countries a dismal 2% attended.
o Muslim majority countries have 230 scientists per one million Muslims
o The USA has 5000 per million
o The Christian world 1000 technicians per million.
o Entire Arab World only 50 technicians per million.
o Muslim World spends on research/developmen t 0.2% of GDP
o Christian World spends 5 % of GDP

Conclusion.
The Muslim World lacks the capacity to produce knowledge.
Another way of testing the degree of knowledge is the degree of diffusing knowledge.

o Pakistan 23 daily newspapers per 1000 citizens
o Singapore 460 per 1000 citizens.
o In UK book titles per million is 2000
o In Egypt book titles per million is only 17

o Muslim World is failing to diffuse knowledge

Applying Knowledge is another such test.
o Exports of high tech products from Pakistan is 0.9% of its exports..
o In Saudi Arabia is 0.2%
o Kuwait , Morocco and Algeria 0.3%
o Singapore alone is 68%

Muslim World is failing to apply knowledge.

My Advice:
Please educate yourself and your children. always promote education, don't compromise on it, don't ignore your children's slightest misguidance from education (and please, for God's Sake, don't use your personal contacts or sources to promote your children in their education; if they fail, let them and make them learn to pass; b/c if
they can't do it now, they can't ever).
We are World's biggest and strongest nation, all we need is to
identify and explore our ownselves. Our victory is with our knowledge,
our creativity, our literacy...And nothing else..
Please Muslims....Wake up... Its not too late

There must be enough universities imparting technical, medical and natural science courses throughout the country. The important part is the research and development. R & D facilities are either non-existant or of poor quality in most asian universities. Only few universities and colleges can speak proudly about the R&D facilities, number of papers published etc. Most of the students try to secure thier PHDs as quickly as possible so that they can get a job. Quality of work in thier research is the last thing they mind.

To become really world class education institute, this problem must be tackled at the university level.
