good god man. lets have one thread without me having to see a china vs india thread.
this gender imbalance is a huge threat to society. when small countries like south korea does it, it affects the world very little. when the world's most populous country and the second most populous does it, it has a global implication.
first let's talk about what is happening in Korea. Korea is traditionally an "ultra" confucian country that is almost radically patriarchical. there are south korean male politicians even to this day saying openly that women shouldnt be president. But traditionally families prefer boys as men are the bread winners and traditionally, women would leave their family to join her husbands. Modernity has changes korea, but culture changes slowly. But abortion is legal in korea and even though ultra sound sex identificatio. is illegal in korea, many people just fly to other countries to check it out.
Now this has caught up to Korea and many old bachelors especially in the poor countryside are having difficult time finding wives. even with a gender imbalance, an obivous solution would be for men to marry later in life and women to marry earlier. but in korea, both men and women are marrying later in life. Right now, these poor farmers are marrying even poorer women. Many are ethnic koreans from china, vietnamese, and philipinas.
Now what will happen to China and India? General rule of thumb is that the women will be from a poorer place than where they are. afterall, why would any women go to a far away exotic place to marry poor old men whom they have no cultural connection with?
I think the answer is simple. twenty years down the line places like vietnam or the phillipines are NOT going to be any poorer than china so no women from those countries will come. but even if they did, there simply arent enough women to marry all those bachelors. So where?
Who in the world usually gets really screwed over? answer is simple.
we will probably see a very different future...
