The government has rolled out a plan to purchase a ship worth 3.5 billion shillings, to assist in the fight against illegal fishing on the territorial waters of Kenya.

Speaking when he met the parliamentary Committee on Agriculture at the Sarova Whitesand Beach Resort in Mombasa, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Cabinet secretary Willy Bett said although Kenya has a rich coastal fishing ground, marine fisheries contribute only five percent of the 174,000 metric tones of fish produced in the country annually.

“Kenya is losing close to 10 billion shillings annually as a result of illegal and unregulated fishing within its territory. The government set to procure a ship worth Sh3.5 billion from Pakistan to be used in the fight against illegal fishing,” said Bett.

The CS said the ship will be delivered in January 2017, adding that it will be used to patrol local territorial waters in a bid to keep off foreigners from engaging in illicit fishing habits.

The CS said illegal fishing is mainly targeting the valuable fish species which fetch higher prices from the international market.

“The government had found it hard to contain illegal fishing due to lack of patrol vessels,” said Bett.

This comes after a section of Coast leaders expressed concern over the government’s failure to address illegal trawler fishing, arguing the menace might lead to depletion of some fish species.

That's a lot of tonnage of steel. What did the Govt of that time did after that? I wonder some of them must have been sent to USSR, some as souvenir. But I think lot of then should have been given to scrap dealers to be melt in re rolling mills??
