This is simply not true. Your statement shows you should stick to your day job. The great economic depression was just that a depression. What has happend now is a systemic failure. the whole capitalist system is under question and this is accepted by eminent western economists.

I think we need to chillout about the US economy collapsing threads... Its not something that going to happen overnight...
In a free market system, the economy will self correct and this is evident with the cyclical up-down we adults have come to experience. That is why I do not see our current crisis as an economic one but rather of governmental interference and badly done at that. People must decide what they want: Either economic freedom or economic servitude to the government. The more the government has its hands into any business, personal or public, the greater the control it want. And we have seen enough disasters governments can do throughout the world. Governments are good at financing and leading individual projects with specific goals that are achievable within certain parameters. The space program is an excellent example. But in order to control the economy, governments would have to control the people's lives because their behaviors dictate the economy. Should some banks and car companies be let go, as in either collapse or into bankruptcy restructuring? Yes, we should have taught ourselves a lesson with that.

. .
People speak too much without seeing the fact and history, Noting is going to happen to US economy. They know how to deal these hard phase and it's not button to just press and it's gone. It will take time to recover. However people are not dying there at-least.

I think that if we accept that capitalism is the right system then we should let banks and large companies go bust. It would be good for the economy in the long term or thats the theory

You say that but the unemployment went up unexpectadly to 9.2% and 1 in 6 americans are on food stamps. this may be not that bad for other parts of the world but for americans to accept this as the norm is or was unthinkable just a short time ago.

Any way an Interesting piece (maybe off topic)

News of the Future : according to this site, US will remain biggest economy till 2040 !! so people's dream of seeing US collapse is a big fail, it is almost certain that till next century US will continue to dominate world ecomically , though China will become more dominant by mid of this century !!

News of Future: China has Passed the US as the World's Largest Economy

February 21, 2040 - Analysts report that China passed the US as the largest economy in the world last year. With a nominal GDP* of US$29,300 billion for year 2039, China is ahead of US with more than US$500 billion. China has tenfold their GDP over the last 35 years.
The US was the world’s largest economy for about a century, since the British Empire suffered severely in the Second World War. China can now look for a reign on the throne for about 30-40 years before the currently fastest growing major economy, India, is likely to surpass them. India became the world’s third largest economy in year 2034 with the help of their growing population and will challenge the size of the US economy in a decade.

Even though China has passed the US in total, the US is still by far the nation with the biggest GDP per capita with US$73,830, followed by Japan, United Kingdom and France, among the largest economies in the world. China, as the second most populous country in the world, has a GDP per capita of US$20,610, more than twice as much as India on US$8,180.

Your economics class was sub-par or you are a liar. Shall I post some figures (such as comparative unemployment between now and the great depression, or will you admit you were wrong?)
(Ps...don't know what uni you attended but economics are required for most degrees here)

The Great Depression had devastating effects in virtually every country, rich and poor. Personal income, tax revenue, profits and prices dropped, while international trade plunged by more than 50%. Unemployment in the U.S. rose to 25%

Current unemployment..9.2% (a hint...25% is greater than 9.2%, in any country. World trade has yet to drop 50% in this recession)

Other economic downturns have been called a "great depression", but none had been as widespread, or lasted for so long. Various nations have experienced brief or extended periods of economic downturns, which were referred to as "depressions", but none have had such a widespread global impact

Some journalists and economists have taken to calling the late-2000s recession the "Great Recession" in allusion to the Great Depression
(a recession is not a "depression")
