What's new

Whatever

@jamahir so it was a Linux based destro that you mentioned few days ago India is making as a new OS because of security issues ? Is it Boss Unnati?

I forgot if I have mentioned BOSS but I checked BOSS Unnati's Wikipedia page and it seems that this version is the latest version of BOSS and with a new UI called Cinnamon instead of GNOME.

"Unnati" in Sanskrit meaning "Progress".

You never mentioned Boss, but you mentioned once that India is making an OS for domestic uses.

Yes I had mentioned that. It was first announced by the chief of DRDO ten years ago :
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is working on creating a futuristic computing system, including India's own operating system, said V.K. Saraswat, Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister and DRDO Director-General.

Talking to journalists after inaugurating the DRDO Transit Facility here on Saturday, Dr. Saraswat said: “We do not have our own operating system. Today, various bodies, including banks and defence establishments, need security. Having our own operating system will help us prevent hacking of our systems.”

Two software engineering centres are being set up for this purpose in Bangalore and New Delhi. “To start with, we will have 25 scientists at each of these centres. We are in touch with institutes such as the Indian Institute of Science, Indian Institute of Technology Madras and the Centre for Development of Telematics, besides universities and industries. We will use available talent.” Citing security reasons, he refused to provide details of organisations involved in the project.

The new operating system would also have commercial use, he said and added: “With a home-grown system, the source code will be with us and it helps in securing our systems,” he said. Asked about the money involved for the project and the timeframe, Dr. Saraswat said it was fairly a costly affair, without elaborating on the timeframe.
Now, ten years later, not even a boot-loader has been written.

@fitpOsitive, from that first announcement in 2010, it became this in 2012 :
HYDERABAD: Exhorting the need to have a robust cyber security system in place, DRDO chief V K Saraswat today said the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) alongwith other premier institutes is developing India's own operating system (OS), which is likely to be ready in next three years.

"One of the major elements of cyber security is having our own operating system because today we are dependent on all OS systems which are imported whether it is based on Windows, Linux which is likely to be having malicious worms/things and hence it is essential that we have our own OS," the DRDO Director-General said here.

Speaking to newsmen on sidelines of NAVCOM-2012', two-day international conference on Navigation and Communication that began here, Saraswat, Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister, said, "We have already started a major programme and are one-and-half-years into that programme. It (Indian OS) is a major effort requiring large number of software engineers working together."

He said 150 engineers were working across the country on creating Indian OS, and added it will take at least three more years for getting the Indian OS ready.
I wonder what those 150 engineers have done until now, eight years later.

May be requirements are changing very rapidly. It's not engineers, it's managers. Linux destro is also OK, I will say. Should do the job.

I don't think so. The DRDO chief said these 150 scientists and engineers were already "one and half years into the programme" and they expected something in the next three years.

So, starting from 2010 and by the end of 2015 they should have announced at least a basic thing like whether the OS was based on microkernel or monolithic architecture, whether it would allow multi-level security. Etc.

I think they simply couldn't even put block diagrams on the whiteboard.

Linux destro is also OK, I will say. Should do the job.

Then they should have said so now. :)

But a page on their website does say that they do work with hardened Linux. I suppose, like you said, they custom-fit Linux to various high-reliability needs. But does Linux fit entirely, given that there are other existing RTOS' ( like QNX Neutrino ) ?

*RULE 72*

*What is Rule 72?*

In personal finance, if you divide the number 72 by the rate of interest, you get to know the number of years it will take for you to double the money..
Eg: if the rate of interest is 9%, simply divide the number 72 by 9% and the answer is 8. Thus it will take 8 years to double your money if you invest at 9% p.a. rate of interest.

*INTEREST:* We can use this rule in reverse to know the rate of interest needed to double your money to achieve your set goal.
Eg: If you have 250k today and you need 500k in 5 years. Just divide the number 72 by 5, the answer is 14.41%. Thus you need a type of investment avenue, where you earn at least 14.41% p.a. as rate of interest/returns to double your investment amount in 5 years.

*INFLATION:*
This 'Rule 72' helps you to understand about inflation also. It helps you to calculate the amount of time it will take for inflation to make the real value of money half. Let's say present inflation is 5.5%. When you divide 72 by 5.5% the answer is 13.09 years. That is to say, if you have 100k in your kitty today, it would take around 13.09 years for the value of the money to be halved..

Hope it helps you in your day to day investments and other finance related activities.
