The difference is in Launch mass.

GSLV MK2 D5 has launched 1,982 kilograms of satellite.

GSLV MK3 will launch 4500 to 5000 kg of satellite.

GSLV MK3 will have heavy boosters and so can launch heavy pay loads .

Since we do not have Cryogenic engine our mars probe had wait for one month in earth's orbit before making journey to mars, USA has bigger rocket so it directly launched mars probe to mars.

PSLV rocket used for mars probe can only launch smaller weight pay loads since it do not include cryogenic stage, Reason why ISRO has to trim the weight of mars probe before launching. ISRO initially planned mars probe launch with GSLV, but the launch of GSLV was called off because of technical snag so they used PSLV instead. Now they launched GSLV after postponement.

Now with this launch of GSLV Mk2 D5 we also posses Cryogenic engine technology . If Mars probe is launched now we would have saved 30 days of journey to mars .
