What patriotism mean to you

Raja....very nice thread. We need to think a lot if we seriously try to answer. We often confuse patriotism with 'loyalty to the ruler' or government and support even if they do wrong. But, patriotism is loyalty to the country- aspiring for its progress, happiness of its people. Again,we become so parochial in it that we do not hasitate to hate people living outside the border of the country often without reason. In an attempt to glorify our own country we look down upon the achievement of others. If we only think about our family, we will be termed as selfish, un-patriotic. But, due to some unknown reason we have to extend our generosity only upto the boundary of our country. Not more than that. I think 'Patriotism' itself is a selfish word. Or I am confusing it with chauvinism. I wish oneday words like patriotism, chauvinism etc will be forgotton and we will not be restricted to consider all people of the world as our own......

patriotism does not mean dying for your country as most of the people have the opinion....it means doing your but for your country and contributing to it in every possible way.....you pay taxes because of patriotism....you get yourself, your children or somebody else educated for patriotism.

I dont think taxes has anything to do with patriotism. I pay taxes in england not for patriotism but to get the facilities/benefits government provide for paying these taxes and national insurances.

Patriotism to me is working for the betterment of your home(wherever that may be) and helping your citizens to improve society. One doesn't have to carry a weapon in a fight in a foreign land to be a patriot. A cancer survivor or fire fighter can be described as a patriot to me.:usflag::china::pakistan::police:

What patriotism mean to you? . It is a simple word that means so many different things to so many different people

Is patriotism your conviction that your country is superior to all others because you were born in it ? Is it blind love and devotion for your country?

Do you think patriotism is defending your country even if your country is going to do something which you feel is not right thing to do for example wage war . Are you not patriotic if you criticise ur country or take criticism from others?

Share your thoughts and Plz no spamming or off topic discussion. Thanks

Great topic for an in depth discussion!

some very nice thoughts there. The healthy kind of patriotism arises within us because the actions and principles of our country align with our personal sense of virtue, goodness and justice. Patriotism is the feeling of security you feel when you have a place that you can call home, with your own familiar customs, and where you have an idea what to expect from your environment as it is what you grew up with. Patriotism is NOT blindly accepting the words of those around you. Patriotism is NOT blindly shooting at others because someone else told you to. True patriotism cares not for political parties but for what is right, in the same way that a true patriot clings not to his friends but inseparably to what is just and true :)

Its nice :) i want to share this poem which is relevant to your thoughts

Where is Love in this world today?

It is not in the eyes of the enemy
who hates us because we do not worship as he does.

It is not in the back streets where drugs are bought and sold
and young lives are snuffed out in the process.

It is not in the eyes of the greedy
who will betray all to get their riches.

It is not found in the heart of those who seek power
To manipulate their fellow man

it is not in the minds of those cowards
who inflict pain and sorrow on their neighbors.

It is not found in the evil man
who terrifies his wife and children with his violence.

It is not in the thoughts of the gangs
who discriminate against other races and cultures.

It is not in the prisons where inmates make plans to riot
against those of other ethnic backgrounds.

It is not living in the hearts of so many world leaders
who want only to display their dominion over others.

So, Where is Love?

It can be found in the heart of a friend who does not judge you
but loves you in spite of what you believe even if it does not agree with his beliefs.

It lives in the heart of the volunteers
who work with drug addicts in the hope of rehabilitation.

It is alive in those generous individuals
who donate to help the needy and the oppressed.

It can be found in abundance in the man who quietly works
to clean the waste and the pollution in our environment.

It is there in the neighbor's heart
who lends a helping hand when it is needed.

It thrives in the heart and mind of the husband and father
who works diligently for the good of his family.

It dwells in the heart of the minister who reaches out
to the gangs and who goes to the prisons to deliver a message of hope to the inmates.

It lives in the hearts and minds of all those who pray for new world leaders
who can work with all nations to lead us to peaceful coexistence.

It is in the eyes of a child
who has never heard curses or felt the blow of his parent's hand.

It is alive and well in the minds, the hearts, and the souls
of those who think of others less fortunate.

It is alive in the arms of the mothers and fathers who cherish their children and embrace them in warmth and tenderness.

Love is still alive in this world. Sometimes it is hard to find, but it does live on and will continue to live as long as one person reaches into his being and brings it forth.

Patriotism to me refers to loyalty & sacrifice. Loyalty means optimism when the chips are down & everyone is discounting your nation, & one isn't afraid to defend their country.

.
Everyone loves their country for whatever naive reasons there is.
Still in this world people are bought up by their GOV believing how
wonderful their physical boundary is and everyone else on the other side are
either enemies or simpletons.

Let me quote what some astronaut said......

For those who have seen the Earth from space, and for the hundreds and perhaps thousands more who will, the experience most certainly changes your perspective. The things that we share in our world are far more valuable than those which divide us.
- Donald Williams, USA

Patriotism is ones rightful duty for his country in the time of need
without offending other nations.
