How is India united...? When i went to India everyone considered them selves according to their ethnicity. Everyone considers them self "jatt","martathi" and ect...

That's our regional identity of which we are also very proud. But, there are no 2 ways about us being proud Indians first.

Go ask any guy on the street whether he's an Indian first or any regional identity.

What keeps India together?

There is definitely an Indian culture/civilization that all share in. The land feels sacred, hindu pilgrimage sites go from the Himalayas to Sri Lanka. Democracy, because there is no need to take up arms if you have a disagreement, you can always vote the government out. Federalism, states can go there own way, hence we have communists for more than a generation in Bengal, business minded govts in Gujurat, muslim appeasement in UP, language chauvinists in Tamil Nadu...to each his own.
