I like Cold war tropes and films and tv shows dealing with the era personally I rather have been born in the Cold War era the War on Terror and Mid East is just ghey

There were some foundational issues with the USSR

* Marxism was envisioned for European states that had gone through the industrial revolution and agrarian/farming society had been replaced by labourers society. More specifically the labour class replaced small farmers. On the other hand, the Russian Empire had a limited industrial base, fewer urban centres, and was largely agrarian.

* The Soviet Revolution may have had large support base in the urban centres where there was a labour class but not in the rural centres, which constituted the majority of the population. Thus, the Soviet Revolution does not appear to have had the majority's support.

* But because of their urban presence and support Red Forces (Leninist Communist) were able to quickly mobilize by taking over the train system and perhaps also printing press. The Whites who had majority's backing were limited in their mobility because they were still relying on horses for their movement.

* Lenin and other communists propagated anti-imperialism perhaps to portray themselves as softer power compared to the Whites & Monarchists. But once they took over they retained the Russian Empire instead of disbanding it. Communist Imperialism replaced Monarchic Imperialism. Most of the Soviet head of states acted no less than absolute monarchs.

* Poor remained poor & perhaps became poorer. Bureaucrats became rich and powerful.

Positive side: The Soviet leadership did initiate mass industrialization in the country.

there is no difference, the media then was full of fear as it is today. then it was Russian will pop out of the nearest manhole. Today its Muslims will appear with a suicide vest. Then there was no such thing like this social media which youngsters are glued to today. if it has existed then a lot of propaganda would have been negated I believe.
