Why does it matter what he was called ?

Gandhi was a Hindu Negotiator whom the British trusted to take care of their interests.

It matters. Rabindranath Tagore did not just give the title.

Both Gandhi and Annie Besant were students of Madame Helena Blavatsky.

They learnt Hinduism through Madame Helena Blavatsky's Blavatsky Lodge of Theosophical Societies.

Gandhi did not know much about Hinduism until then and he read Gita for the first time after joining the lodge.

Annie Besant was secular and socialist activist associated with Fabian Society (Jawaharlal Nehru was also a member of Fabian Society) and was already fighting the British for the Irish rights. After she joined the lodge she got involved with fighting for the rights of the Indians too and got associated with Indian Congress party.

Mahatma was the title given to the Ascended master members of the Blavatsky Lodge.

Gandhi earned the Mahatma title as the member of the Blavatsky Lodge.

All of these were part of the Freemason family just like Swami Vivekananda.

Both Annie Besant and Swami Vivekananda represented and spoke at World's Parliament of Religions conference of 1893.

1. Theosophical society was a pathetic attempt by the british to recreate a "prophet" after having superficially read the english translations of Hindu scriptures and imitate Hinduism. They tried to "read" Hinduism like it was some Abhrahamic religion of the Book and failed miserably.

Hinduism is an religion that stresses on Inner experience, not bookish knowledge or armchair philosophies.

It was a perversion of Hinduism by the britsh, the same way the concept of "aryan" was perverted by the Germans.

The Mahatma they claim is what you call a "prophet"

2. Fabian society OTOH was a organization that sought POLITICAL CHANGE and had very little to do with religion. They were more in line with Carl Marx than Hinduism.

3. Blavatsky Lodge was again another variation of the same experiment to understand Hinduism from an abrahamic lense. It was an offshoot of the London Lodge.

All of these harebrained societies popped up after Max Muller translated the Vedas by 1874.

4. Gandhi was born into a devout Hindu family but he may have read the English translation of the Gita in UK. In any case it could not have made any significant impact on him since he does not advocate what Sri Krishan advocated in the Gita i.e. War with the Kauravas / British.

5. Reality is Gandhi was first called 'Mahatma' by a journalist from Jetpur town in Saurashtra when he was in South Africa in 1916 and after that Tagore called him 'Mahatma'. So that name was floating around.

Rabindranath Tagore called Gandhi "Mahatma" in his Autobiography after Gandhi called him "GuruDev".

6. Gandhi was not the only person to be called "Mahatma".
Jain saints are called "Mahatmas".
Indian saints like Basaveshwara was called "mahatma".
There was "Mahatma" Munshi Raj Vij of Arya Samaj,
"Mahatma" Lalon Shah of bengal who influenced Rabindranath Tagore,
Mahatma Jyotirao Phule the social reformer of Maharashtra etc.

Just so happens that Gandhi was the most famous "mahatma", just like "Gautama" was the most famous "buddha", so that name stuck.
