The famous Italian brand Vespa had been considering installing a factory in Pakistan during the tenure of the last government, The Nation has reliably learned. Yet, sadly, the venture did not come to be, due to a minister in the ruling party demanding an astounding 40% cut for himself in the deal.

The iconic Italian brand having manufacturing facilities in Pakistan would have had resounding effects on other famous brands in the world to use Pakistan as a manufacturing base, thus generating thousands of jobs in the process, as well as rehabilitating Pakistan’s image as a business-friendly nation.

Unfortunately, the persons considering the investment were disheartened by the huge demand of a 40% bribe. It was made clear to investors that neither 10% nor any low amount would be accepted. This resulted in investors begging leave, and crossing Pakistan off the list as a manufacturing base. A lost opportunity, which may just have been one of many lost opportunities due to the endless greed of a few.

Fine example of shoddy journalism. Why not name the minister? At least share how credible is the source, without of course naming them. Incompetence at best and blackmailing journalism at worst.

Need more buses and public transport, not 2 wheelers; those are a curse on this country right after those damn chingchi's and the new larger abominations of 3 wheeled loaders.

After the introduction of bus pooling services, i've had my monthly petrol bill reduced by 60%. I exclusively travel to my office by bus now.

It is against the code of business ethics and conduct for vast majority of western companies to pay such kick backs. Nobody will invest in Pakistan from the west if such type of swine ministers are not given worst of punishments.

True; but, the point was the missed opportunities of increasing industrial base due to PPP and PML always wanting their cut upfront. I personally know someone who wanted to setup computer parts manufacturing in Pak but one of the ministers (whom I shall not name) asked "what is in it for me?" when the business man said, it will help Pak's development, he repeated, "so, what's in it for ME?"

That was in the '90s. So many missed opportunities.

Why IK ministers are not presenting the case in talk shows?

Vespa is a comical vehicle for clowns. Get serious. We need Honda, Toyota, VW etc.

Bikes, chingchis, rickshaws and three wheeler delievery box are more than enough for us.

As per my father he said that Vespa wanted to install their plant in Pakistan but the s Government only favored corruption and a result they left.
