That is the right question - the first person to talk about the real possibility of the balkanization of Pakistan to me (as if he was waiting for it was a serving aabpara office resident.

One thinks of the “establishment” as one organ whereas it is more akin to(in terms of ideology and goals) to a private corporation with each board member having their own agenda. Some align and some don’t.

The result is how we end up with NRO’s and such movements gaining momentum with certain hands either slapping the other at critical times sabotaging national interests for personal glory. These hands themselves aren’t all brass but a mix of military & civil officers, intel and bureaucrats alike with their social & religious ideals as well.
Finally, the competency and intelligence also varies and so does suitability to the role. You can have lazy brilliant ones and competent fools or have completely mismatched skillsets in the role.

Finally, you have these actors all pushed through “civil society” and its paparazzi and dollar loving types along with white beards spouting verses as well. After all, a sitting member of the CII has been caught drunk returning from certain embassies and the five star hotel establishments meeting grounds for Mohsin Dawars, education heads, fashionistas and foriegn embassy staff and “visitors” alike.

Pakistan isn’t protected on its fronts by some unified organ or everyone with a rank; it’s protected by a few good men(and women) who work tirelessly in their roles with honesty of purpose and love for their country. It tires them, demoralizes them many times but they try to soldier on. These known and unknown heroes are what keeps the jalopy going.

Not saien, khan, sharif , mir, bhai or jarnail sb... just many different last names many of whom will walk on unnoticed & uncaring for adoration.

Not that recent - I’d say 2007 or so. What I wanted to highlight was that it was from a serving gentleman so the “demoralizing ” is part of the very system designed to protect it.

It is not a state specific issue, the problem with the national character is either being obsessed with self aggrandizement and bluster and/or self depreciation, moral/ethnical corruption.
There is no balance to the majority in any form: social, religious, monetary, racial attitudes etc.

In such an environment, any tom,dick and harichand can use the power of monetary, fame or familial compulsion to get people in influential positions to defect in purpose.

There is an MQM leader I know through verified testimony who can get you an Indian visa by a single phone call - but is also in rapport with agencies and their darling for times they need to tackle PPP influence.
