What's new

Violent clashes erupts in Indian Punjab, many feared dead, News and updates thread.

Law& order is a state subject, Modi has no role to play in this

Police who deal with the reality on the ground are best suited to take the necessary decision. Not me.
So police and army can gun down rioters without trial and rule of law...in other democracies that's called murder. Same coin just different views. Modi as head of state is responsible for overall governance of the country, which apparently by your views he doesn't have or Indians don't care for its fellow citizens.

What has gone wrong with India under Modi... he killed Burhan Wanni and entire Kashmir is on the streets showing their hatred for India and now same happening in Indian Punjab. I really hope a reformist is set free and is not penalised un-necessarily.

LOL...ok.

The law permits police to take action including firing on the rioters if and when the situation arise.

You are free to call it what you want. It does not make the slightest difference to us.

Modi just follows the constitution of India as the head of state and as long as he does that, he is doing just fine.

People in India are actually angry that the government is not being harsh enough to forcefully stop the protesters.

One little piece of info for you:

Constitution of India allows people to protest and express.

It doesn't allow people to burn public property, kill non-protesters, burn trains and threaten strategic assets of the country.

That is the same as terrorism.

The mobs already killed about 8 people which is an act of murder and burned down a lot of valuable public property which is an act of arson and destruction.

as long as they are human, who cares... why u people are so much in this low cast, ruling section shit?

For the simple reason - please try to understand this, without clinging on to stereotypes - that there are wrongs to correct, and to correct these, one has to identify who have been wronged. Two thousand years of oppression cannot be made to disappear by the wave of a wand: whether that wand invokes a constitution with universal suffrage, or imposes a religion ostensibly equating everyone, it is a false move, and gives a false sense of comfort. So when Indian commentaries speak about the specific identity of a situation, try to listen: there are many things being said, and a blunt approach is of no use.

HIGHLIGHTS

    • The Army, Rapid Action Force and police entered the Dera Sacha Sauda headquarters near Sirsa, Haryana
    • Officials said they've not yet been ordered to vacate the premises and are there to enforce curfew
    • Nearly one lakh Dera followers are reportedly still camped at the headquarters
NEW DELHI: The Army, Rapid Action Force (RAF) and the police entered the headquarters of the Dera Sacha Saudanear Sirsa town in Haryana, a day after sect chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was convicted of rape, sparking large-scale violence by his followers.

The Army along with the police and paramilitary forces has put up barricades at entry points of the Dera Sacha Sauda HQ. However, they've not received the go-ahead to vacate the premises.

"There is still no order for the Army to enter the campus. They are only ensuring enforcement of curfew in the area," said Sirsa sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Paramjit Singh Chahal.

Over one lakh followers are reportedly still camped at the headquarters to protest against Friday's verdict in spite of repeated exhortations by security forces and district officials.

"The Army has been asking the followers to vacate the Dera premise voluntarily. Over 2,000 followers have left but still nearly one lakh people are stationed there," a senior police official said earlier in the day.

Police also sealed nine congregation centres of the Dera Sacha Sauda in Kurukshetra district, evicting the followers, and seized over 2,500 lathis and other sharp-edged weapons during a search operation there.
After evicting Dera followers, a large number of security personnel have been deployed outside the Dera Sacha Sauda's congregation centres to prevent any untoward incident.

The move came after tens of thousands of supporters of Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh went on the rampage in Haryana and Punjab on Friday, attacking and setting on fire public property to vent their anger against the court verdict.

Meanwhile, security forces remained on high alert in Panchkula as an uneasy calm prevailed in the district. The violence that claimed 31 lives and injured over 250 others has left locals in shock and anguish, with many questioning why the authorities failed to assess and control the situation in time.

"We have been living in a state of terror. Yesterday and over the past few days we have been wondering if this is Panchkula or a city in some war-torn country," a youth, who resides here, said while recalling the ordeal.

Curfew had been clamped at several places in Haryana and Punjab after the violence and officials said that relaxation had been given at most places this morning to allow people to buy essentials.

Chandigarh: Punjab and Haryana High Court on Saturday slammed the Haryana government for the widespread violence and arson which took place in the state in which over 30 people were killed in the wake of conviction of Dera chief in a rape case.

"You let Panchkula burn for political benefits," said HC.

The HC also accused the Manohar Lal Khattar government of misleading them and said that there was a sea difference between administrative and political decisions.
At the same time, the court asked the state government for details of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's movable and immovable properties in Punjab and Haryana till next hearing on August 29.

Yesterday too, the HC had ruled that the damages would be be recovered from Dera Sacha Sauda if followers of Ram Rahim were found involved in causing loss to public and private properties.
The bench comprising Acting Chief Justice SS Saron, justices Surya Kant and Avneesh Jhingan had taken a serious view of the situation that had emerged.

"Whosoever has been instigating and inciting the crowd that has gathered to commit the acts of arson and violence they would be sternly dealt with. The damages that are caused to public and private properties shall be recovered from them," the bench had observed.

CBI judge Jagdeep Singh had yesterday held Ram Rahim, 50, guilty of rape in a case that was registered on the basis of an anonymous written complaint in 2002 that he had sexually exploited two female followers.

On the basis of the report, a case was registered against him in December 2002 by the CBI on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The quantum of sentence against Ram Rahim will be pronounced on August 28, CBI counsel HPS Verma told reporters outside the court.
The punishment can be a jail term not less than seven years but may even extend to life imprisonment.

As the news spread, Dera chief's followers unleashed violence and set afire a large number of vehicles, buildings and railway stations in Panchkula, as well as in Sirsa, where the Dera is based, and in Punjab.

Media persons and assets were among the main targets of the mobs.
Police and paramilitary used force, including firing and lobbing teargas shells, to control the volatile situation created by the dera followers who had gathered in thousands defying the prohibitory orders like Section 144 of the CrPC, which bars assembly of more than four people at one place.

So human life is less valuable than public property, got it. What's point of having public property when its citizens are being killed becaused of it? Are you suggesting Mobs are more equipped for killing than Police and Army and deserve to be gun down? Please educate us.

I post several days ago: as long as the stand-off continues, all indian internal collision will break out one after one...spreading rape crime is just one of their frail nerves.
