Vietnam's most modern expressway to open to traffic

Construction of Tan Vu-Lach Huyen Highway project starts

The 15.6 km long route runs across Hai An and Cat Hai districts of Hai Phong city, starting from the Tan Vu interchange on Hai Phong expressway and ending at Lach Huyen port.

The route includes a 5.44km cross-sea bridge which is designed to have four lanes with two safety ranges and for cars to run at a maximum speed of 80kmph.

The Tan Vu-Lach Huyen Highway project links Hai Phong’s eastern urban area, Hai Phong international port, Dinh Vu-Cat Hai industrial park, and Ha Noi – Hai Phong Highway.

It aims to reduce travel costs and time, traffic accidents, and transport risks by ferry, stimulate industrial development along the coastal area of Hai Phong, and promote tourism on Cat Ba islands.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, PM Nguyen Tan Dung thanked the Japanese Government and the Japan International Cooperation Agency for closely coordinating with and provididing official development assistance for the Viet Nam.

He also tasked the Ministry of Transport to ensure the progress and quality of the project undertaken by Japan’s Sumitomo Mitsui contractor consortium, Truong Son Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, and Civil Engineering Construction Corporation No4 (CIENCO4)./.

VGP – The construction of the Tan Vu-Lach Huyen Highway project began this morning in the Northern city of Hai Phong.

Lach Huyen Port Infrastructure Construction Project in Hai Phong City is a seaport of type IA and plays role as an international gateway port. Lach Huyen Port is planned to be constructed on the south of Lach Huyen’s river estuary, which is situated in Cat Hai Island, Hai Phong city, along the access channel to natural elevation of -3,0m with the total berth length of approximately 8,000m, the total length of the access channel of about 18km and the bottom elevation of -14m. In accordance with the Decision No. 476/QĐ-BGTVT dated 15 March 2011 of the Ministry of Transport, in the starting stage, the infrastructure of Lach Huyen Port Infrastructure Construction Project will be constructed to meet with the demand of accommodating container and general vessels of up to 100,000 DWT and receiving the forecasted cargo volume throughput in 2010÷2015 stage of about 6 million tons with the total investment capital of about 25,000 billion VND. Lach Huyen Port Project is under public-private partnership (PPP) and inclusive of 02 portions: Portion A is owned by Vietnam Maritime Administration, Portion B is owned by a Joint Venture between Vietnamese and Japanese enterprises.

Portion A : is owned by Vietnam Maritime Administration and inclusive of the following main work items:
- Access channel: One-lane channel of B = 160m, bottom elevation of -14m (Chart Datum).
- Turning basin has D = 660m for general vessels of 50,000 DWT and container vessels of 100,000 DWT.
- Breakwater has the length of 3,220m, crest elevation of + 6,50m
- Sand protection dyke has the length of 7,600m, crest elevation of +2,0m
- Service berth
- Road and yard in administration area
- Administration area and state management units

Portion B : is owned by a Joint Venture between Vietnamese and Japanese enterprises and inclusive of the following main work items:
- Container berths: there will be 02 container berths with length of 750m, crest elevation of +5,50m (CD);
- Barge berth for barge and vessels of up to 100 TEU, crest elevation of + 5,50m (CD), bottom elevation of– 5,0m (CD).
- Technical infrastructure, fire protection system, etc.
- Technological equipments will be invested modernly and synchronously for the port management and operation that meet with the cargo handling demand in the present stage and future development. The main equipments include gantry crane with lifting capacity of 54 T, rubber tyred gantry crane (RTG), lifting, tractors, etc.

Lach Huyen Port Infrastructure Construction Project is expected to be completed and put into operation by year 2016.

Due to Vietnam's geographical size and the nature of her territory, it won't take much to fortify her transportation infrastructure.

We don't care much about ranking. Fast and safe moving around is our expectation.

I mean why are people driving without lane and light? Looking at this situation, your country need a major shake up in infrastructure.
the traffic condition is still bad in vietnam. traffic incident is common. it is still a long way to go. I wish our people can copy from singapore.

I read there are plans with italian companies to open some sorts of restaurant chains along the highways. Vietnam Vingroup plans to open 25 big shopping malls alone this year. such malls offer everything, including food courts.

Right now, the best way if you are hungry is you drive off the highway and search for local foods.

This rest stop value 1.2 million USD. There will be few stops. Because the longest expressway route is only 250 kilometers.

This is what I think how the development follow:

Phase 1:
- Take a flight from Hanoi ( Noi Bai Int'l Airport ) or Haiphong( Cat Bi Int'l Airport ) in North to Ho Chi minh city ( Tan Son Nhat Int'l airport ) and vice versa. take 2 hours.
Same to a flight from Hanoi / HCMC to some resorts like: Vinh, Hue, Da Nang, Hoi An, Quy Nhon, Nha Trang, Phu Quoc ..).

There's no need to take some time to transfer to another domestic flight. Because the maximum distance from any main airport to anywhere less than 270 kilometers.

At destination airport, take bus or car rental to reach the final destination within 1 - 4 hours as maximum ( see Noi Bai - Lao Cai Highway) via express way. Average 2 hours.

This is more of an incentive now for me to visit Vietnam and drive from Hanoi down to Saigon (HCM) ! :D

If Vietnam has one-tenth of that, it's more than enough.
The advantage of Vietnam is stretch from North to South, so no need to spread wide the network.

As I posted above, a heavy air transport system from North to South combined with expressway could replace entirely the demand for Highspeed railway.
I just booked air ticket on sale for my sister to take a vacation in Quy Nhon,
Ha Noi - Quy Nhon and back , about 25$ / return ticket. It takes 1 hour and 35 min. distance: over 1,000 kilometers

If it's possible, I vote for HSR from Saigon to Nha Trang;

Yes 55km of 7,100 km until 2020. The beginning of anything big is always small.
By the way, Vietnam population is much smaller compare to China population too.

Vietnam’s longest expressway opens, cutting Hanoi-Lao Cai travel time in half

Vietnamese transport authorities on Sunday opened a 245 km expressway, the longest of its kind in Vietnam, to traffic on Sunday, halving the travel time between Hanoi and Lao Cai province.

The opening of the Noi Bai - Lao Cai expressway took place in a ceremony held yesterday morning in Bao Thang District, Lao Cai, in the presence of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, who cut a ribbon to inaugurate the new road.

The expressway runs from Hanoi’s Noi Bai through the provinces of Vinh Phuc, Phu Tho and Yen Bai before reaching Lao Cai, said the Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC), the new road’s investor.

The Hanoi-Yen Bai section has four lanes for vehicles, with a speed limit of 100 kph, while the Yen Bai-Lao Cai section has two lanes and a limit of 80 kph, said Mai Tuan Anh, general director of the VEC.

The expressway features 120 bridges, including two large ones that span the Hong and Lo Rivers. It also has a 530-meter long tunnel, 13 toll collection stations and five rest stations.

The expressway will help shorten the travel time from Hanoi to Lao Cai from the current seven hours to 3.5 hours, VEC said.

In addition, vehicles using the expressway will use less fuel, as they won’t have to stop frequently.

The new facility will also help ease traffic density, as well as traffic accidents, on National Highways 2, 2B, 32C and 70.

Eight traffic rescue vehicles, six ambulances, two fire engines and six patrol traffic cars are intended to be used on the new expressway to deal with any problems that may occur.

In case of incident, travelers on the expressway can call the emergency line at 1900 545 592, and rescue workers will arrive within 15-30 minutes, Nguyen Van Nhi, deputy general director of the VEC, said.

The expressway is part of the China’s Kunming – Vietnam’s Hai Phong Transport Corridor and belongs to the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) cooperative program linking Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, and China.

Should have gone for a Four lane at least,since VN is a growing economy this highway will be saturated in no time.

Of course, Vietnam, Southeast Asia countries share the development rate to Japan by such cooperations.
