In short, ancient Vietnam saw itself as real China. So actually you were seen as barbarian.
I am not surprised that ancient Vietnamese wanted to be Chinese by calling or otherwise imaging themselves as the Chinese. But your second sentence is an obvious BS from 荻,荑,蛮,狨, as your Viets were so eager in adopting Chinese language, which you deemed as a superior system for many reasons.
This was not a singular instance in long, documented Chinese history. Huns wanted to be Chinese, Jin (Qing’s ancestors) wanted to be Chinese. Mongols became Chinese successfully by conquering China, they proclaimed that they got the “heaven’s mandate” and became Chinese in their declaration of Yuan Dynasty. Qing also merged themselves forcefully into China as Chinese. Vietnamese seemed to fail in doing so because it was not an easy task.
... When Hans 漢Chinese was in Zhong Yuan 中原 insulted other Chinese: 北狄, 東夷, 南蠻. You are internal Chinese 化內之民, if you dont live today in 中原 you could be 北狄, 東夷, or 南蠻.
Vietnamese are non-chinese people 化外之民, no related to 化內人民 including 漢 + 北狄, 東夷, 南蠻.
All Vietnamese and Chinese readers:
The distinct and brilliant Chinese civilization was, for some unknown reason, only originated from a small region called Yellow River Basin:
The Yellow River basin has an east-west extent of 1900 km (1,180 mi) and a north-south extent of 1100 km (684 mi). Its total basin area is 742,443 km² (290,520 mi²).

Why it was only originated there, not anywhere else (such as in Yangtze River), it is still in a debate. Although it is found that in many areas, there were signs of civilization such as in Zhejiang province (Liang Zhu
Liangzhu culture - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ) and somewhere else, but none is comparable with that of Yellow River Basin.
However, as a famous Chinese historian (sorry I forget the name) said, in old times the peripheral were full of uncivilized “barbarians”, and
they mostly relied on insects, animals, weeds, etc. to live and to teach. Thus their names were with insects, animals and weeds (such as 荻,荑,蛮,狨. Please note that in earlier Vietnamese posts, those writings are not correct. Please pardon them as they don’t know what they are writing due to different civilization). Chinese is more of civilization than just human genes.
This scholar went on:
we are fortunate since our ancestors were able to come into contact with Chinese civilization and absorbed it so we eventually got rid of the insects, animals, weeds parts and civilized to become true humans.
Look around peripheral of today’s China, which has been about 10 time bigger in size, still there are number of places where people reject their Chinese civilization and abolish using Chinese language, causing themselves a big trouble: they lost their history and don’t know what to do as they side with insects, animals and weeds in today’s sense. Really, they have to think it deeply whether to keep that parts with them or thoroughly abandon them …
