The navy is good I'm with you on that, but it's already outnumbered by the PLAN navy and the gap is widening year on year, as for tech it is comparable for both sides. That's not a good situation. You've mentioned their lack of long range strike missiles which now a days counts as a disability in conflict situation, you might as well not fight than be struck by salvo after salvo.
Yes they have a great history of naval warfare but when was the last time they fought a conflict? In light of the stresses they face resource wise, population wise, just how long would they last?
I'm not underestimating them I'm questioning their ability to sustain a prolonged fight and even the will to fight. Remember that survey done i.e. regarding on whether people would fight for their country, Japan came bottom.....

Slumdog are you insinuating Japanese land force could stand a chance against the PLA (the world's biggest army and rapidly modernizing) ? Even American soldiers are scared of the thought of fighting the PLA on the ground. I don't have to remind you how the Korean War ended when Chinese troops were fighting 19 countries that scared the sh!t out of them so much they had to retreat back to the South. Even your pathetic Indian army would stand no chance fighting our ground troops FACT.

Japanese Navy is good, but against our number of warships and subs it's already a lost cause. By 2049 China would have at least 10 AC and who knows how many number of helicopter carriers + vast amount of modern destroyers. Keep envying our 055 because China industrial capability is unmatched. Our newest destroyers shall be equipped with state of the art weaponry that's making the region crapping in their pants. Stealth bombers, J-20, J-10C, destroyers with railguns and more to come.
