Vietnam is interested in buying 14 fast patrol boats for an approximate US $212 million from Indian Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd (GRSE).

“Tomorrow a Vietnamese delegation is coming to see our facility and to discuss on procuring about 14 fast patrol boats for coastal surveillance,” GRSE chairman and managing director Admiral A K Verma said today at MCC Chamber of Commerce and Industry during an interactive session with the Ambassador of Vietnam.

Verma said tentative cost for the boats could be in the range of $15 million each.

GRSE officials said the Vietnamese delegation had also visited the L&T and Pipavav shipyards, but it was not clear whether it was for the procurement of patrol boats.

GRSE has already produced 18 similar fast patrol boats for the coast guard in the past.

“We have the design, knowhow and capability to produce. We have done in the past and are very hopeful to get this export order,” Verma said.

The contract was expected to be finalized by the year end and if it sailed through, then it would be the second export order for GRSE after an offshore class vessel worth $54 million order for Mauritius.

If I'm Vietnamese, i do prefer us to design and construct (with direct or indirect help from expertise around the world). This bring a lot more benefits to the country:
- Increase of ship building capability;
- Keep the money inside the country;
- Expand the local supporting industries;
- Might have capability to build patrol ship especially to poorer countries in the future;

But keep in mind that, a lot of military procurement from outsider always prone to corruption or kickback....

yes, of course it is much better if we buy the license, import the technology and build the ships at home. we may buy 2 from India and assemble 10 in our shipyard. negotiation.

Most of news in last 10 years on Vietnam buying weapons from India never materialiased. I doubt about the quality of this news.
In addition, there is no such news on Vietnam media.

lolwut?I thought Vietnam is better than India in shipbuilding..
Of course our shipyards can produce vessels of all kinds all tonnages from 250 tones to 2,500 tones. Okay, I reveal you a secret, only here on this forum, but pls don't forward this info to the Ccp supreme leader Xi Jinping: it is more than just buying ships from india, but geopolitics. similar to the step we invite indian company to drill for oil in the SC Sea. Politics is a dirty business.

Get it?

more boring news.. i'm sorry but it is boring.. need to see a revolution or something to the extreme..
I mean these toys are really wasting money.. It's good for patrolling etc.. what's the point when your enemy is building runways on the islands?

I was hoping for some R&D and some advance engineering news article. It's so boring when they keep purchasing these toys.
