Defence export likely to cross Rs 10,000 crore by end of FY, says Secy Defence Production

India's defence export is likely to exceed Rs 10,000 crore by the end of the current financial year, said Secretary of Defence Production Ajay Kumar Friday.

"Indian industry has been doubling the defence exports in the last three years. Three years back, total defence export from India was only about Rs 1,500 crore. Last year, the figure reached Rs 4,500 crore. This year, by November, we have done Rs 7,500 crore export, and by March we are going to cross Rs 10,000 crore," said Kumar speaking at a seminar on 'Opportunities for Defence and Aeronautics in Gujarat' organised as part of the 9th edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit.

He termed opacity of the defence sector as one of the biggest challenges for the industry. Kumar added that defence investor cell, an online cell created by the government, acts as a guide to retrieve information, understand issues etc.

"This was started about ten months back and the MSMEs have particularly benefited from the cell in the last 10 months," he said.

Mukesh Ambani urges Modi to take steps against 'data colonisation'

Reliance Industries Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take steps against 'data colonisation', especially by globals corporations and said Indian data must be owned by Indians. Ambani also said Reliance would invest Rs 3 lakh crore in various Gujarat Projects in the next 10 years ranging from energy and petrochemical to new technology and digital business.

"India's data must be controlled and owned by Indian people and not by corporates, especially global corporations. For India to succeed in this data-driven revolution, we will have to migrate the control and ownership of Indian data back to India. In other words, give Indian wealth back to every Indian," Ambani said.

Reliance Industries has also invested billions of dollars in the roll out of telecom venture, Jio.

"Gujarat is Reliance's Janmabhoomi (birthplace) as well as its Karmabhoomi (workplace). Gujarat has always been - and will always remain - our first choice. We have so far invested nearly Rs 3 lakh crores in the state of Gujarat. And created and catalyzed over one million livelihood opportunities in Gujarat. In comparison to the past decades, Reliance will double this investment and employment numbers over the next ten years," he said.

Co. aims to introduce electric vehicles in 2020 to fight CO2 emission: Suzuki

Participating in the Summit, Japanese auto maker Suzuki Motor Corporation Friday said it will commission its third plant at Gujarat by 2020 and will introduce new hybrid vehicles in India with technical support from Toyota, PTI quoted.

Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) President Toshihiro Suzuki spoke at the Summit and sought an enabling policy support from the government to further invest in localisation of components of hybrid and electric vehicles.

Suzuki said that first vehicle assembly plant of the company was inaugurated in September last year, the second plant will start shortly and they plan to commission the third plant by 2020.

Suzuki laid down the company's plan in Gujarat and said after three plants in operations, the annual production capacity of Suzuki Motor Gujarat will be enhanced up to 7,50,000 units and the company will also start production at its engine and transmission plant in the state shortly. The SMC said in a statement that it has started production of its hatchback Swift from the second plant in the state.

Suzuki said it will enable "us to bear fruit of integrated vehicle manufacturing in Gujarat"; and the state is becoming "more and more important as a production site for Suzuki group".

Acknowledging the challenge to reduce CO2 for the prevention of global warming, Suzuki said SMC is tackling the issue from various angles and as one of the solutions, it has decided to introduce electric vehicles in India in 2020.

"In the Indian context, we firmly believe that hybrid and CNG vehicles are the most effective solution, with fastest results," he asserted.

Top industrialists pledged further investments on Friday after Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit that India is poised to be placed among the top 50 countries in ease of doing business by 2020.

Top executives from companies such as the Tata Group, Reliance Industries, Adani Group, Aditya Birla Group, Russian oil and gas explorer Rosneft and Suzuki Motor Corporation praised Modi government’s performance in the last four-and-a-half years, at the inaugural function of the three-day event in Gandhinagar.

Vibrant Gujarat, a biennial event aimed at drawing investments to the state, is the brainchild of Modi when he was the chief minister of Gujarat. The first edition in 2003 attempted to rekindle investor confidence in a state wracked by a devastating earthquake in 2001 and communal violence in 2002.

“India is now ready for business. In the last four years, we have jumped 65 places of global ranking of ease of doing business. I have asked my team to work harder to ensure India is on the top 50 next years,” Modi said at the inauguration.

Tata Group chairman N. Chandrasekaran said the summit has set an example in India on how to bring different stakeholders together for progress, development and economic growth.

Chandrasekaran praised the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government in the centre and said its accomplishments are enormous, laying a platform to propel India to significant growth for several decades.

“We are in discussion with the state government for significantly increasing our capacity at Tata Chemicals to reach one million tonnes of soda ash and we have an electric vehicle (EV) plant here (at Sanand) and we want to make further investments, not only in building electric vehicles but also in putting lithium ion battery projects here and we will also be investing in producing renewable energy,” Chandrasekaran said.

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) chairman Mukesh Ambani, India’s richest man, said the group has invested close to ₹3 trillion in Gujarat and created and catalysed more than a million livelihood opportunities there.

“In comparison to the past decades, Reliance will double this investment and employment numbers over the next 10 years,” Ambani said.

The RIL chairman, who has been attending the Vibrant summits since the first edition in 2003, said that it was very satisfying to see how every other Indian state has followed Gujarat’s transformative template.

Ambani called Modi a visionary leader and said that under his leadership India has become the fastest growing economy in the world.

Meanwhile, the Adani Group aims to invest ₹55,000 crore in the next five years in Gujarat.

“Over the next five years, our investments will include the world’s largest Solar Hybrid Park in Khavda. The anticipated investment is this park is ₹30,000 crore. We also plan to establish a one gigawatt Data Center Park in Mundra, a one million tonne of copper smelting and refining project, a cement and clinker manufacturing unit in Lakhpat, an integrated lithium battery manufacturing complex and expand our photovoltaic manufacturing capabilities. Overall, we anticipate a total of ₹55,000 crore of investment in all these projects,” Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani said.

Modi has fundamentally reshaped India, Adani said, adding that nowhere in recent history has such a massive segment of the population been given the opportunity for upliftment in such a short period of time.

Aditya Birla Group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla promised an investment of ₹15,000 crore in Gujarat in various sectors. “Gujarat has seen exponential growth without compromising on macroeconomic stability. It’s on the back of the remarkable business-friendly environment that Aditya Birla Group has rapidly increased investments in the state,” said Birla.

Guangda Xiang, founder and chairman of Tsingshan Industry, China, said, “Our first step towards India was in Vibrant Gujarat 2017 when we signed an MoU for setting up a big scale stainless steel complex in Mundra in cooperation with Indian partners. Within one year of signing the MoU we started construction of our first phase project, which will be completed in record time of 14 months.”

Suzuki Motors chief executive officer Toshihiro Suzuki said his company will continue to introduce cutting-edge technologies in India, along with the Make in India concept, and contribute to sustainable mobility solutions.

Didier Casimiro, the global head of downstream for Rosneft, the world’s largest publicly traded oil and gas company, said Vibrant Gujarat has graduated from an investment promotion event to a forum to forge strong relationships.

Rosneft, which holds a majority stake in Nayara Energy that runs a 20 million tonne refinery at Jamnagar, aims to further invest $850 million for expansion in Gujarat, according to Casimiro.

The leaders of five countries—Uzbekistan, Rwanda, Denmark, Czech Republic and Malta—along with industrialists from various sectors and more than 30,000 delegates from India and abroad are taking part in the Vibrant Gujarat event.

Modi said that international institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have shown confidence in India’s economy and the reforms undertaken in recent times. “We have also made ‘Doing Business’ cheaper. The implementation of GST and other measures of simplification of taxes have reduced transaction costs and made processes efficient. We have also made ‘Doing Business’ faster through digital processes and single point interfaces,” he said.

There must be some confusions...this must be some fake or over rated report, probably a media propaganda war.

Maruti Suzuki's MD, Kenichi Ayukawa and Toshihiro Suzuki, President, Suzuki explain the model To PM Modi
Highlights
  • PM Modi visited Maruti's pavilion at the 2019 Vibrant Gujarat Exhibition.
  • PM Modi looked into the model of the upcoming lithium-ion battery plant.
  • Maruti Suzuki's MD, Kenichi Ayukawa briefed PM Modi about the model.

Electric mobility has been on the government's agenda for quite sometime and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been showing interest in the development. On his visit to the 2019 Vibrant Gujarat Exhibition, PM Modi also spent time at Maruti Suzuki's pavilion and had a look at the scale model of India's first lithium-ion plant which Suzuki will be setting up at Hansalpur, Gujarat. The Prime Minister was briefed about the model of the upcoming plant by Maruti Suzuki's MD- Kenichi Ayukawa along with Toshihiro Suzuki, President- Suzuki Motor Corporation.

In September 2017, Suzuki had partnered with Toshiba and Denso to lay the foundation for a new lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant in Gujarat and the joint venture will be investing Rs. 1,151 crore to set the production unit in the state. In the JV, Suzuki holds 50 per cent of the stake while Toshiba and Denso account 40 per cent and 10 per cent respectively. The investment will be shared in the ratio of their shareholding.

The lithium-ion batteries will primarily be used in Suzuki's own hybrid and upcoming electric models, however, the joint venture is open to supplying batteries to other automakers as well. The plant is likely to begin operations in FY2021 and it will primarily export batteries. However, the lithium-ion batteries will also replace the lead-acid batteries used in Maruti Suzuki's model line-up in India along with the global models. There is a possibility that Toyota may also use these batteries for its hybrid and electric models such as the Toyota Prius and Camry Hybrid. Toyota and Suzuki also have a separate JV where both companies will be cross-badging their models. Maruti Suzuki will be supplying the Baleno and Vitara Brezza to Toyota which Toyota will retail through its own dealerships while Toyota will give the Corolla Altis to Maruti Suzuki.

The electric WagonR could be the first model to get the lithium-ion batteries from the Gujarat plant.
Maruti Suzuki had already flagged-off the trial run of its electric Wagon R hatchbacks in India earlier in 2018 and it will be the first model to use these batteries. Hybrid models like Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and Ertiga will also be fitted with the batteries rolled out of this plant. Moreover, Maruti Suzuki will also invest additional Rs. 3,800 crores in the same facility to set up its third car plant in the country.
