V - - - ger reaches the edge of our solar system

The ipad of yesterday could out do the super computers of that time.

It's always fun to interpret people's behavior through the years. For example, if you same someone talking to himself into the air

- in 1960 you would think he was a loony.
- in 1999 it would be a high-powered executive making million dollar deals.
- in 2012 it would be a 12 year old kid chatting with his friends.

Well with Generational we are talking about families being on board the ship. The parents teaching their children and the children growing up to take over the jobs of their parents.

A crew of maybe 100 people, with on board grown food, CO2 scrubbers, power generated through solar, radiation and some form of a nuclear reactor a mission can be designed to last out a few hundred years and from there the crew can take the mission further.

Instead of living people, you could have a spaceship full of thousands of copies of the DNA for a complete colony. At each suitable planet, a complete DNA batch of the colony would be seeded onto the planet to grow into a copy of the colony.
 
That gives us thirteen years to develop new propulsion technology and send out a repair mission to replace the batteries...
Absolutely! By about 2030 we most likely would have developed propulsion systems that would allow space craft to approach at least half light speed. That means it would take a space craft just over a day to reach the Voyagers! But then they would have become redundant by then as newer technology would allow craft to head toward the nearest star system - Alfa Centauri.

At half light speed, it would take the craft just 8 years to traverse that distance!

Imagine a spacecraft from Earth landing on another star system and sending back images of an alien environment! Now that would be really mind blowing and a quantum leap in cosmic exploration - the first baby step for exploration of the galaxy by the human race!

And in a century perhaps we would have perfected FTL (Faster Than Light) propulsion technology! Now that would be the game changer! But there's more. In probably 300 years or so, we would have discovered other methods of spanning those vast interstellar distances with such esoteric concepts such as worm holes.

And the next 1000 years we could well achieve instantaneous travel by quantum entanglement commonly referred to as 'teleportation'! (Though not the same).

What was considered science fiction yesterday is reality today!

Unfortunately, we won't be there to see this happening!

The closest thing theoretically to achieving a very high speed is anti matter propulsion.

That's what I remember from my limited reading on the subject in an elective course.

That's what I read on the subject a while back.
Theoretically a space ship is considered which will travel at almost/or at speed of light.....it will gain its momentum from incident photon from sunrays....as the photons will reflect back....it will provide necessary momentum..by law f conservation of momentum...problem is to build such a large disc shaped ship which is very light weight with 100% reflective coefficient...............

I agree and with achieving light speed you're looking at a massive amount of energy for even a little bit of mass.

I think the discovery of weight cancelling devices or related inertial dampening systems would come before a super fast propulsion system would come.

With mass effectively near 0, the energy required to reach light speed would be nearly zero.

Not sure about the brute force approach of going faster; as others pointed out the relativistic problems are quite daunting. Worm holes may be an option. Another science fiction concept I like is that space itself could be 'crunched up' in front of the spacecraft. We believe space itself is expanding, which is partly contributing to the expansion of the universe. It may be possible to 'unexpand' space locally. It does leave open the unpleasant question of what the spacecraft would leave behind in its wake.

Perhaps you are joking...but it never hurts to think outside the box.

The colony seeding? It's just an artificial twist on an old idea - panspermia. Would make a good TV series, though.

In 1989 both Voyager spacecraft had passed Neptune and Pluto. Carl Sagan wanted one last picture of Earth from "a hundred thousand times" as far away than the famous shots of Earth taken by astronauts from the moon during the Apollo series.

The result is stunning. In Sagan's words, "Because of the reflection of sunlight off the spacecraft, the Earth seems to be sitting in a beam of light, as if there were some special significance to this small world. But it's just an accident of geometry and optics. The Sun emits its radiation equitably in all directions. Had the picture been taken a little earlier or a little later there would have been no sunbeam highlighting the Earth.

Not sure about the brute force approach of going faster; as others pointed out the relativistic problems are quite daunting.
I wonder if you've read some of the papers concerning FTL travel which have been peer reviewed by scientists at LANL (Los Alamos National Laboratory). The equations are mind boggling, but in a nutshell, it theoretically proves that a space craft can travel faster than light speed by enclosing itself within a plasma bubble that warps the space-time continuum.

Einsteins theory of Relativity is intact as the craft itself is at zero velocity and thus zero g force whilst accelerating to FTL velocities within seconds! Seems hardcore sci-fi, but it's all there! The only thing left is to put this to test in the real world!

It's now 2012. I'm talking of achieving this within a few hundred years. Remember, a little over a century ago, scientists said that heavier than air machines are impossible!! :woot:

And have you heard of instantaneous interstellar communications in a paper by Fran De Aquino of LANL, last revised in Jan 2008 titled, Gravity Control By Means of Electromagnetic Field Through Gas or Plasma at Ultra-Low Pressure?

The GCC (Gravity Control Cell) antenna radiates graviphotons and gravitational waves simultaneously. Thus it is not only a gravitational antenna, but a Quantum gravitational antenna because it can also emit and detect gravitational Virtual quanta (graviphotons) which in turn can transmit information instantaneously from any distance in the universe without scattering.
