V - - - ger reaches the edge of our solar system

Isn't there a next one planned? I think the next one should have some sort of a rechargeable power source.

All these cosmic rays hitting the spacecraft should somehow be harnessed into energy. In space you are not limited by weight, just need to give the initial heave ho and the object will keep going.

Also how about a generational crew this time? Someone to maintain the ship. People who leave Earth to colonize space.
As far as rechargeable one is considered, you don't know which type of radiation it experiences, so you can't apply any material on its surface or anything to generate energy. Another thing is if we can make 100% efficient engine and 0% loss of fuel by recycling...which is impossible...law of thermodynamics....

As far as colony of people are concerned, it takes hell lot of time to reach astronomical distance that we can't possibly reach, then many factors counts in, physical, mental, etc states of the travelers, oxygen, food and water supply.

There are few good movies on how it feels when people go out to distant space.

NASA is nothing compared to what it used to be.

The sent a man to the moon without computers!

Well, that is certainly an exaggeration! All of NASA's space vehicles, manned and unmanned, are controlled by computers. How could it possibly be otherwise?? Note to youngsters: the iPad is NOT the first computer invented and produced by mankind! I used a time-shared computer at my USA college in 1963. I used the Internet on my personal computer in my office at a major US corporate R&D laboratory in 1976!!!

hope in our life time there is a space ship developed to transit us to the new planet, gotta be so exciting

I remembered when Voyager 1 was sending back the pics of Saturn rings. That was time magazine cover issue.

Wow, it has been a while !!

Yes!! and remember when the crew of the USS Enterprise had to convince it that they were agents of its Creator and it should shut its self down!!! Thankfully, Captain Kirk and his crew prevailed!!!!

OMG!! How old are you?!

I am 66, soon to be 67.

The Corporate R & D laboratory that I worked in was on the ARPANET starting in 1974. I received my first personal computer, hooked up to the ARPANET and our internal Corporate internet, in the spring of 1976. By 1978 my company's R & D labs in the USA, England and Japan were linked together over our internet with over 5,000 personal computers, as well as to any ARPANET terminals that were online.

Its a great to read about the baby steps of the Internet !!

Wow! Interesting history. US was decades ahead of us at that time. At least now it is years. So those days there were any 'internet' kind of applications? Apart from mail of course.

And let me guess your company. :)
Bell Labs

With hard drives the size of a car and printers with hydraulic pumps :P

That's the kind of nostalgia my father runs by me when talking about his early professional days in Karachi.

The ipad of yesterday could out do the super computers of that time.

Well with Generational we are talking about families being on board the ship. The parents teaching their children and the children growing up to take over the jobs of their parents.

A crew of maybe 100 people, with on board grown food, CO2 scrubbers, power generated through solar, radiation and some form of a nuclear reactor a mission can be designed to last out a few hundred years and from there the crew can take the mission further.

I understand that its hard that's why its not been attempted but if a repeat attempt from 1977 till now has to be made it should be done with people.
