THE United States is likely to help Taiwan upgrade its fleet of F-16 A/B fighter jets to counter a growing military threat from China, Taipei-based media said on Wednesday.

The US administration has been evaluating Taiwan's defence needs for the next five to 10 years, considering whether to supply the island with more advanced F-16 C/Ds or help it upgrade the F-16 A/Bs, said the state Central News Agency.

It quoted Rupert Hammond-Chambers, president of the Washington-based US-Taiwan Business Council, as saying that an upgrade deal could be announced next year while a sale of F-16 C/Ds was likely to take place in President Barack Obama's first term.

'It's only a matter of time,' he was quoted by the United Evening News as saying, referring to the sale of the F-16 C/Ds.

A sale of F-16 C/Ds to Taiwan would be certain to trigger the ire of Beijing, which reacted furiously when the Obama administration in January announced a a 6.4-billion-dollar arms package for the self-governing island.

Taiwan's Liberty Times newspaper also cited unnamed sources as saying that Washington had agreed on a fighter jet upgrade starting next year, and would set up a special task force on the matter. Defence officials were not immediately available for comment on the reports.

USA will only sell inferior or obsolete military hardwares to Taiwan because USA doesn't trust Taiwan and not because China opposes
the sale of high tech hardware.

The US is just looking to make some money off Taiwan as usual.

The island given its current status is entitled to have its own defence, but everyone understands for it to militarily counter China is a losing course. So the strategy is to milk the cow will you still can...

Not a bad thing. I hope Taiwan gets some F-35s so when we reunify we'd have some pretty good fighter jets getting into the Chinese arsenals.

Do not even dream about it. currently F-35 gets more than 3000 order from program partner country. And 2009-2010 Lockheed Martin only delivers 30 units. For year 2010-2011, the production number is 32. It is nearly impossible to sell F-35 to non-program coutry before 2022.

Except that indigenous Chinese weapon is not yet of Western standards, let alone exported versions... The Middle East lost its war against the US, since the day of Sovet collapse.

Not all wars are won with superior weapons. The Soviets, as a matter of fact, did not fall because their weapons were inferior.

Wars are not won by weapons. Nazi weapons were superior to the Allies, they lost the war. Chinese ragtag peasant army pushed UN forces backs to 38 parallel despite not having heavy weapons and air/navy superiority. Vietnamese equiped with inferior Soviet and Chinese weapons united the south and won the war.

Aghan wars still fight on despite the best weapons being deployed.

Wars are won by determination, huge sacrifice and winning people's heart.

LOL. So what you are saying is : A man with a small pistol will be no match with his enemy who carries a machine gun ? Yes the man with the machine gun has a higher chance of killing the man with a pistol but that does not mean that the man with the pistol cannot kill the other guy.

And yet, Hizbullah defeated Israel in 2000 and 2006. With all those advanced weapons and U.S. support they just can't defeat these brave freedom fighters.
