Wont work, the US holds the largest gold reserves in the world at 8133.3 tons. Compare that with PRC - 1054.1 tons, Iran - 907 tons, Russia - 871 tons etc.

Obviously the US is not going to have its reserves in dollars.
Anyways, as longbrained pointed out, it doesn't make any difference how much gold the US has. What's important is that the US can't control gold trade the way it can control dollar trade. Additionally, a move away from dollar financing would make the dollar weaker, making it harder for the US to keep building its gold reserves.
