US to strike Iran N-plants?

LONDON: Stepping up its preparations for a possible strike on Iran's nuclear facilities, the United States is transporting hundreds of 387 'bunker-buster' bombs to its air base on the British island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, a media report claimed on Wednesday.

The US government signed a contract in January with Superior Maritime Services to transport 10 ammunition containers to Diego Garcia from Concord, California, the Sunday Herald reported.

The shipment includes 195 smart, guided Blu-110 bombs and 192 Blu-117 900kg bombs. The key Iranian nuclear facilities are underground and both these type of bombs are effective against reinforced or underground facilities.

The US and Israel have repeatedly asserted that they do not rule out a military action to stop Iran's nuclear ambitions and that they are keeping all the options on the table.

Contract details for the shipment were posted on an international tenders' website by the US navy. "They are gearing up totally for the destruction of Iran," Dan Plesch, director of the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy at the University of London, said.

"US bombers are ready today to destroy 10,000 targets in Iran in a few hours," Plesch, who is the co-author of a recent study on the US preparations for an attack on Iran, stressed.

The final decision on whether to launch an attack would be in the hands of US president Barack Obama. He may decide that it would be better for the US to act instead of Israel, Plesch argued.

"The US is not publicising the scale of these preparations to deter Iran, tending to make confrontation more likely,"Plesch said, adding, "The US is using its forces as part of an overall strategy of shaping Iran's actions."

Diego Garcia is a British territory about 1,000 miles south of India and Sri Lanka but is used as a US military base as part of an agreement reached in 1971.

The British ministry of defence has said in the past that the United States government would need permission to use Diego Garcia for offensive action. It has already been used for strikes against Iraq during the 1991 and 2003 Gulf wars.

About 50 British military staff are stationed on the island, with more than 3,200 US personnel. Part of the Chagos Archipelago, it lies about 1,000 miles from the southern coasts of India and Sri Lanka, well placed for missions to Iran.

The US department of defence did not respond to a request for a comment, the report carried by the Sunday Herald said.

Hundreds of powerful US “bunker-buster” bombs are being shipped from California to the British island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean ahead of a possible attack on Iran, The Herald reported Wednesday.

The Scottish newspaper said the American government signed a contract in January to transport 10 ammunition containers to the island. According to a cargo manifest from the US navy, this included 387 “Blu” bombs used for blasting hardened or underground structures, The Herald reported.

The report quoted experts as saying that the bombs are being put in place for an assault on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

According to the newspaper, although Diego Garcia is part of the British Indian Ocean Territory, it is used by the US as a military base under an agreement made in 1971.

The report said Superior Maritime Services, a shipping company based in Florida, , will be paid $699,500 to transport many thousands of military items from Concord, California, to Diego Garcia.

The cargo includes 195 smart, guided, Blu-110 bombs and 192 massive 2000lb Blu-117 bombs, said The Herald.

Dan Plesch, director of the Center for International Studies and Diplomacy at the University of London and co-author of a recent study on US preparations for an attack on Iran was quoted by the Scottish newspaper as saying, “They are gearing up totally for the destruction of Iran. US bombers are ready today to destroy 10,000 targets in Iran in a few hours."

According to Plesch, US President Barack Obama may decide that it would be better for the US to act instead of Israel.

“The US is not publicizing the scale of these preparations to deter Iran, tending to make confrontation more likely,” he was quoted by The Herald as saying. “The US ... is using its forces as part of an overall strategy of shaping Iran’s actions.”

According to The Herald, the British Ministry of Defense has said in the past that the US would need permission to use Diego Garcia for any attack. It has already been used for strikes against Iraq during the 1991 and 2003 Gulf wars.

The report said about 50 British military staff are stationed on the island, with more than 3,200 US personnel. Part of the Chagos Archipelago, it lies about 1,000 miles from the southern coasts of India and Sri Lanka, well placed for missions to Iran.

If US attack, from which side it will enter Iran and will it be ok for its neighbors to use their airspace against Iran.
Second it could be a move to put pressure on Iran to show flexibility in talks.

Wow the showdown is about to start unreal .. GOD help us all.

How clever of India and Israel to create all this dramatic attention of war with Iran. Perhaps they were soo soo busy with their gossip writing they forgot to mention the missiles will most likely be used for an assault on Al Qaida strongholds.

US AND ISRAEL MIGHT USE SOUDI AIRBASE FOR ATTACKING IRAN NUCLEAR FACILITIES

Interesting development.. If US attacks Iran (we are forgetting Iraq as the staging ground) and the 2 countries go to war, would there be any impact on the Iran-pakistan pipeline?? I saw a news article about formalization yesterday or something

People forget it. Its noting going to happen in real world.

Iran is not Afgan or Iraq. The American people will pull down the government if they attempt to start another war. Obama will not do it

I take it this from long years of living in the US?

Yes media helps sometime to pressure rogue countries. Good psychological move US and A.

I don't see any war coming for atleast 5 years.

THis media hype thats all. India will never support an attack on Iran. India and Iran have a long relaaionship. Iran is India's second largest oil supplier.

About 40% of the refined oil consumed by Iran is imported from India

everybody knows US is after oil and natural resources of other countries.

History wont repeat this time for sure.

Its rightly said " more difficult than getting a new idea in is to get the old one out' !

The news is on a possible US strike on Iran... India get involved !!

I saw on CNN Obama saying that Iran is one of his top priorities. Pakistan should not help U.S. in whatever war they start with Iran.

If U.S. attacks Iran, it will damage U.S. economy but Obama wants the Republicans in his side and Republicans hate Obama right now.
