US threatens sanctions against India over Iran oil

What options does india have ? US wants to maintain dollar hegemony and it will punish anyone who goes against it.

India has options, its almost impossible to completly cutoff Iranian oil. There are so many ways they can sell or barter oil, the sanctions are pointless.

1)Iran can sell the oil to a party like Russia, then Russia sells it to India when the crude Tanker in the high seas.

2) India is now paying in Rupees for 40% of the Iranian oil, in a way the sanction has been a blessing for the Indians. The Iranians previously were not amused by the Rupee offer.

Now they are buying Basmoti rice from India.

India challenges U.S. immigration rules at WTO

(Reuters) - India has launched a complaint at the World Trade Organisation over the cost of U.S. work visas, which it says are too high and discriminate against a group of Indian IT firms, in the latest sign of prickly trade ties between the two allies.

The complaint is at the level of WTO "consultations" between the two parties - the last step to resolve a disagreement before entering a full-fledged legal dispute.

"India is taking up consultations on this issue and hopes to solve it amicably," an official at the trade ministry said on Wednesday, asking not to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter.

The official did not say when the complaint was taken to the WTO, but said Trade Minister Anand Sharma raised the visa issue with U.S. Commerce Secretary John Bryson on a visit to India on March 26.

Last month, the United States began the same type of action at the WTO to open India's market for poultry meat and eggs, saying an Indian ban on U.S. imports intended to stop the spread of bird flu was not based on sound science.

A U.S. embassy spokesman had no immediate comment.

Commercial ties between India and the United States flourished after India's economic liberalisation in 1991, but in recent years each side have accused the other of erecting unfair barriers to trade and investment growth.

India's economy has benefitted greatly from information technology firms doing offshore work for U.S. companies, but such outsourcing has become an issue in the U.S. presidential campaign, with President Barack Obama vowing to woo jobs home from overseas.

India's complaint is about a U.S. law from 2010 that almost doubled visa fees for skilled workers to $4,500 per applicant. The bill's sponsor, Senator Charles Schumer, a Democrat from New York, said at the time that the move was aimed at a small group of companies exploiting U.S. law to import workers from abroad.

"I think the government of India is right that this is a barrier to trade," Vineet Nayyar, CEO of large Indian software services exporter Tech Mahindra, told Reuters on Tuesday.

However, Nayyar said Indian industry did not expect visa fees to be reduced and would either become more efficient or raise prices marginally to offset the cost.

India's Kingfisher Needs Foreign Investor to Keep Flying: Pro

Despite efforts to turn itself around India's cash-strapped Kingfisher Airlines will not survive for long unless there is a last-minute bailout by a White Knight investor, an aviation industry expert tells CNBC.

"They [Kingfisher] have lost all confidence from the banks, the markets and their passengers. They're tottering towards their last days unless a foreign investor buys a stake in it," said Siva Govindasamy, Asia Managing Editor at aviation publication Flightglobal.

Kingfisher, which has debt of $1.3 billion, ran in to trouble in March after banks refused to lend it more money for its day-to-day operations. It then ran foul of India's tax authorities, which led to its bank accounts being frozen temporarily.

In a bid to save costs, the airline unveiled a turnaround plan, saying it would stop international flights, cut some domestic routes, and ground a large part of its fleet.

But Govindasamy says cost cutting alone will not help the airline, as the Indian airline industry as a whole is suffering from serious structural problems like an unsustainable price war and government patronage of the national carrier.

Kingfisher cannot raise fares as it and its rivals are locked in a price war with ailing state carrier Air India. "The market is already at an artificially low level when it comes to fares, mainly because of Air India which keeps those fares very low," Govindasamy said.

He adds that the Indian government - which last month unveiled a $800 million bailout package for Air India that has not turned in a profit since 2007 - is effectively subsidizing the low fares and harming the entire Indian aviation sector.

"The government needs to step out of the Indian airline industry and let market forces come in," he said.

Super Powe Bangladesh is in a similar predicament as the poor Indians, that is not in a position to resist U.S pressure.

However, the Russians are capable of resisting US pressure.

Russia can because Russia can supply its own oil. US is sitting on its own oil fields untapped and is regulating what others buy. As long as India is getting oil and is able to supply its economy I really don't care who India buys it from. Iran and India have a good trade relationship and India got nothing against them. India lived under US sanctions for a long time now, doesn't matter if they sanction us again. India already has a good domestic market what India now needs to focus on is in the area exports, and countries like Iran are a good place for starters. Iran already has a deal to trade with Indian rupees, so Indian companies can sell products to Iran without going through the whole deal of conversion.
