Soldiers face charges over secret 'kill team' which allegedly murdered at random and collected fingers as trophies of war

Twelve American soldiers face charges over a secret "kill team" that allegedly blew up and shot Afghan civilians at random and collected their fingers as trophies.

Five of the soldiers are charged with murdering three Afghan men who were allegedly killed for sport in separate attacks this year. Seven others are accused of covering up the killings and assaulting a recruit who exposed the murders when he reported other abuses, including members of the unit smoking hashish stolen from civilians.

In one of the most serious accusations of war crimes to emerge from the Afghan conflict, the killings are alleged to have been carried out by members of a Stryker infantry brigade based in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan.

According to investigators and legal documents, discussion of killing Afghan civilians began after the arrival of Staff Sergeant Calvin Gibbs at forward operating base Ramrod last November. Other soldiers told the army's criminal investigation command that Gibbs boasted of the things he got away with while serving in Iraq and said how easy it would be to "toss a grenade at someone and kill them".

One soldier said he believed Gibbs was "feeling out the platoon".

Investigators said Gibbs, 25, hatched a plan with another soldier, Jeremy Morlock, 22, and other members of the unit to form a "kill team". While on patrol over the following months they allegedly killed at least three Afghan civilians. According to the charge sheet, the first target was Gul Mudin, who was killed "by means of throwing a fragmentary grenade at him and shooting him with a rifle", when the patrol entered the village of La Mohammed Kalay in January.

Morlock and another soldier, Andrew Holmes, were on guard at the edge of a poppy field when Mudin emerged and stopped on the other side of a wall from the soldiers. Gibbs allegedly handed Morlock a grenade who armed it and dropped it over the wall next to the Afghan and dived for cover. Holmes, 19, then allegedly fired over the wall.

Later in the day, Morlock is alleged to have told Holmes that the killing was for fun and threatened him if he told anyone.

The second victim, Marach Agha, was shot and killed the following month. Gibbs is alleged to have shot him and placed a Kalashnikov next to the body to justify the killing. In May Mullah Adadhdad was killed after being shot and attacked with a grenade.

The Army Times reported that a least one of the soldiers collected the fingers of the victims as souvenirs and that some of them posed for photographs with the bodies.

Five soldiers – Gibbs, Morlock, Holmes, Michael Wagnon and Adam Winfield – are accused of murder and aggravated assault among other charges. All of the soldiers have denied the charges. They face the death penalty or life in prison if convicted.

The killings came to light in May after the army began investigating a brutal assault on a soldier who told superiors that members of his unit were smoking hashish. The Army Times reported that members of the unit regularly smoked the drug on duty and sometimes stole it from civilians.

The soldier, who was straight out of basic training and has not been named, said he witnessed the smoking of hashish and drinking of smuggled alcohol but initially did not report it out of loyalty to his comrades. But when he returned from an assignment at an army headquarters and discovered soldiers using the shipping container in which he was billeted to smoke hashish he reported it.

Two days later members of his platoon, including Gibbs and Morlock, accused him of "snitching", gave him a beating and told him to keep his mouth shut. The soldier reported the beating and threats to his officers and then told investigators what he knew of the "kill team".

Following the arrest of the original five accused in June, seven other soldiers were charged last month with attempting to cover up the killings and violent assault on the soldier who reported the smoking of hashish. The charges will be considered by a military grand jury later this month which will decide if there is enough evidence for a court martial. Army investigators say Morlock has admitted his involvement in the killings and given details about the role of others including Gibbs. But his lawyer, Michael Waddington, is seeking to have that confession suppressed because he says his client was interviewed while under the influence of prescription drugs taken for battlefield injuries and that he was also suffering from traumatic brain injury.

"Our position is that his statements were incoherent, and taken while he was under a cocktail of drugs that shouldn't have been mixed," Waddington told the Seattle Times

Why everyone is silent ?

What if this incident would have happened in New york , that would have become a "Terrorist operation" and this thread would have received 100's of replies.

There is no regard for afghan lives , they are as worthless as rubbish?
"If you dont speak against barbarism , then one day it would turn unto you and your nation"

Speak the **** up !

you are quite right!!! this shows how its a media war now a days!! who ever has strong media wins.

I saw this new story and thought about starting a thread here, but then i thought, nah.... just give it a few minutes and... TA-DA!

Anyways, "IF" this is true and the soldiers are convicted and sentenced for the alleged crimes, then i hope they get the maximum penalty that the US military can throw at them! "IF" all this turns out to be hearsay and they are proven innocent after a trial and with no established guilt beyond any shadow of a doubt, then they should be exonerated by every press establishment in the world, while the one spreading the rumors ought to be brought up for making false charges.

A sick mentality from these individuals. They need to be trialed, if proven guilty then they must be punished severely.

Bro, good and bad apples are everywhere. We had the reports of civilians and taliban fighters abuse and mistreatment in the hands of PA, but can we suggest that the Pak Army is bad? Not at all, they are the army of pakistan who is defending their country, but there has been a few bad individual among them.

Well there are Drone attacks on your country. I don't see any protest for it. If any bomb attack happens in lahore/karachi we see lot of noise.

Do you think people lives in NW are less valuable then lahore?

We do protest when innocent civilians get killed!
But these drone attacks have done us more good then bad... I would rather have the terrorists killed there with minimal civilian casualties ( if they are impossible to avoid) then have them come to crowded cities and blowing them selves up there....

on-topic:
I think it's sick what these soldiers did, they should be given the death penalty.

No we didnt sir!
These report were false with no proof!
ISAF is a foriegn force with no reguard of life in another country(afghanistan)... and PA is fighting talib scums in its own country why would a army kill its own people?

We have heard ISAF killing civilians conducting air raids in which innocent afghan citizens have died! Ur president speaking abt it etc?

While in Pakistan we have heard of only 1 such air raid and even tht was by mistake COAS Gen Ashfaq apologized to the people went there and helped the victim by giving them money, free hospitalisation, med services and jobs!Though life of a person has limitless value infront of money but PA still tried!

On the other hand we see extreme fukups by iraq like ****,sodomy, gang ****,killing people for fun?humiliating dead bodies by mutiliating them?severe prisoner abuse? the list goes on!

Ever wonder how many such accidents go unreported?Gives the creeps!
For example google Iraqi women and see the results they will give u the creeps and force u no matter how moderate ur to fight the occupiers!!

Yes there are good n bad people but in CASE of ISAF such sick people dont get reported for the sake of getting battered internationally and thus such sick fuks continue doing there sick shyt!!
Most sick fuks even go unnoticed thts much more worrying !

Anyways best wished for Afghanistan and death to such sick fuk bas..ds.

A shameful act indeed, these men have shown that they are a danger to the society and a disgrace to the uniform. They should be court-martialed ASAP and then tried under a war crimes tribunal, HOWEVER, we should not let this incident generalize our views about American activities in Afghanistan or create any type of stereotypic image of the American forces. MOST of them men and women are working with extreme dedication for a better, safer and more prosperous Afghanistan

It was more than one incident, read this report. That included the civilians as well as the ALLEGED taliban fighters who had either surrendered or captured.

Pakistan: Extrajudicial Executions by Army in Swat | Human Rights Watch

This another report:

BBC NEWS | South Asia | Video shows Pakistan army 'abuse'

Pakistani soldiers are seen apparently abusing Taliban suspects in a 10-minute video which has been posted on the social networking site, Facebook.

The video would be the first clear proof of such abuse. It shows men in military uniform beating suspects as officers stand by giving instructions.

It is not clear who shot the film or where. It appears to have been made recently, perhaps in the Swat valley.

Pakistan's army has said it needs to examine the video before commenting.

Conversations heard on the video suggest it is recent. Troops recently declared they had largely cleared the Swat valley of insurgents after a sustained offensive there.

Human rights groups have accused the military of being involved in torture and extra-judicial killings in the region.

Whips

"This is a very serious accusation," Gen Athar Abbas, head of Pakistan army's public relations wing, told the BBC when asked about the video.

"I cannot comment on the video till we have examined it. This will take some time as the army headquarters will have to be involved in the process."

The footage shows an officer in Pakistani army battle uniform interrogating several suspects, some of whom are quite elderly and are presumably relatives of men being sought.

When the officer does not receive satisfactory answers, he motions with his head and soldiers rush in to punish the suspect.

They then beat him with belts, fists and what appear to be small whips. He is also kicked all over the body by soldiers wearing heavy army boots.

The suspect is heard screaming and imploring the soldiers to stop in the name of Allah, repeatedly saying he has told them all he knows.

In the video the soldiers administering the beating have to be restrained by the officer on at least two occasions.

Threats

After an initial round of punishment, the officer tells a suspect that this is "soft treatment". Unless the suspect tells all, the officer says he will have to administer "hard punishment".

"You don't want me to cut off your hands and feet," the officer says.

If confirmed, this would be the first clear proof of the Pakistani army being involved in the abuse of detainees.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) and other groups have accused the army of such violations during the recent Swat campaign.

The HRCP says it has also found evidence that the army is involved in extra-judicial killings in the region.

The Pakistani army has consistently denied the reports, calling them "baseless."

But it has also said it will investigate if any solid proof emerges of its personnel being involved in such activities.

I dont see a difference between the civilians killed by Pak army and NATO forces, they both have the same nature and facing the same type of enemy with the same tactics. If civilians killed by the nato in Afghanistan, the civilians also killed by both nato and pa in pakistana too.

On the other hand we see extreme fukups by iraq like ****,sodomy, gang ****,killing people for fun?humiliating dead bodies by mutiliating them?severe prisoner abuse? the list goes on!

iraq is not our problem, we have got too much on our own plate, no time and energy to worry about iraqis.

Ever wonder how many such accidents go unreported?Gives the creeps!

the same thing can be said about the tribal areas, had there been not restriction on the journalists, there would have been more stories coming out.

Can u be kind enough to give PROOF of it rather then suspected killings?

Again nothing was proved? it probably was a treatment of taliban... unless u have now feelings for taliban.

Human rights groups have accused the military of being involved in torture and extra-judicial killings in the region.

Accusations?
Results?
Proofs?

Nothing proved desite all tht b.s and accusations but a single extra judicial killing of taliban was proved!

Whips

Accusations against ISAF have been proved!

Accusations against P.A ? Nothing, ZILCH!

The HRCP says it has also found evidence that the army is involved in extra-judicial killings in the region.

Funny the so called evidence was never produced in media or given to UN !!

The Pakistani army has consistently denied the reports, calling them "baseless."

Read the last line!

Thts a bit of an OVER KILL!

Rapes, gang rapes, mutilation of dead bodies, sodomy, killings etc against ISAF have been PROVED!
Be it the killings of innocent in iraq of afghanistan!
Be it abu ghareed rapes of women, sodomy, posing with dead prisoners!Dogs bitting prisoners!Raids on oild tankers in afghanistan killing civilians! **** and kidnapping of women, etc etc

ALL THESE HAVE BEEN PROVED!

Wat abt karzai stating tht innocent afghanis are mostly the victims?
And the only ACCUSATION against PA are extra judicial killings of Taliban?Yet to be proved?

Can u come up with something better?

iraq is not our problem, we have got too much on our own plate, no time and energy to worry about iraqis.

Do u think such things dont happen in afghanistan?

the same thing can be said about the tribal areas, had there been not restriction on the journalists, there would have been more stories coming out.

Im so sorry but Al jazeerah,BBC,CNN,Dawn tv and other Pakistani and foriegn media and other networks have been allowed there!
U can find thousands of reports!
If u want videos please ask me!

Also kindly dont derail this thread! Its about a US soldier killing some afghanis and collecting there fingers as bounty!

Enjoy Fruits of US invasion!

The allegations against nato was proved cuz the armed members of nato themselves gave evidence against their own members. on the pakistani side, nobody gave any evidence against their own comrade. now i dont say the pakistani army is at fault, but there some individuals who are doing this, this is the accounts of the locals and their verdict against the pa individuals.

Who cares about Afghanis? The only civilized nation in the world is the U.S.; thus, they have all the right to do anything.
