India and the US can work out joint ventures to upgrade defence capabilities if New Delhi is perceived as 'a friend and a focal point' in Asia, former Indian Army chief Gen (retd) V K Singh has said.

There is great scope for cooperation in defence technology between the two sides and things will move at a faster pace if Indian military officials are given a greater role in talks with the US, Singh told PTI in an interview.

'There is a great (scope for) cooperation that can be worked out as a joint venture between the two to upgrade capabilities if the US thinks that India is a friend and a focal point for it in Asia,' he said.

'If you look at the policies, it is looked at from that point of view some time back. But that now has to be converted into concrete action.'

Noting that the US is a hub of technology, Singh said there is so much that can be shared in the armament, aviation and naval sectors that it can ensure great economic benefit to the US and technological benefit to India.

'I think there is some reservation in the US on sharing this technology with India. I think it is to mutual advantage of both countries,' he said.

India is looking at technology, and not hardware. 'It has got great capabilities, especially the private sector in India, to manufacture anything, provided the technology is available,' he said.

Singh claimed the Indian system dominated by bureaucrats is preventing 'real military-to-military' talks between India and the US and, as a result, the real potential of defence ties between the world's two largest democracies is not being realised.

Singh, the only Indian general to be inducted into the International Fellow Hall of Fame at the prestigious US Army War College, pushed for strong defence ties between the two sides when he headed the Indian Army during March 2010-February 2012.

Why would they provide technology when we have nothing to offer in a jv thanks to the great chai biscuit organizations like HAL and DRDO!!

.
U again sardar1987 !! The point u make is somewhat correct but the thing is if someone thinks that he/she knows it all and is the most knowledgeable, there there is no more fool than that person.

I have worked (served my training) for an govt organization where US engineers visit, for knowledge transfer from Indian engineers. I am currently employed in a IT job where its in my job profile to update Off-shore people about all the innovations we do in our own firm.

Point here is that yes we are at deficiency here and we will learn the most if we do a JV but even they will not go out empty handed (Intellectually speaking).

What private manufacturing you are talking about ....

Every time I see Indian fellows grabbing number of LCD,LED TVs at Singapore , Bangkok airports ....It just reminds me the grim reality that we are not even able to assemble the LCD, LED TVs which our people have to carry from these countries ...

Do you really believe what you are saying ? or is it sheer optimism ...?

I doubt how much you really mean ...

I do not see what US has got to benefit from JVs .....You need some sort of parity for JVs to take place ...

Even in advanced field of Space technology , US is talking of co-operation and not JVs ( and well deservedly ) ..

There are very few common meeting points between US and India ....

The chasm of technological gap is too huge to be abridged by JVs ....

I hope if our people will stop basking in IT- innovation -supremacy glory ....and look at the whole segment of technological advances that lie ahead ....

Obviously your view point is biased by being in IT sector ....apart from that one sector we are miserably backward in all others .

Such kind of self-serving , self-congratulating attitude is damaging to us in long run as it keeps us away from ground reality !

Usually I would have disagreed.

But I had a guest lecturer today from IIT Bombay. He also consults for DRDO.

I offered to show him around our facilities when he made a few anecdotes regarding his consulting position, including the development of mil-spec semiconductors in DRDO of the 22nm node/s. He mentioned they were able to meet the materials challenges.

I had a limited amount of time otherwise I would have asked him more questions, especially regarding the applications for such technology.

It's ok...there will be always some people who will not agree ...some will attack you ....some will humiliate you ...It's basic nature of human beings to belittle whom you don't agree ....

At the same time you may not be correct always ...We should take all criticism in right perspective and move ahead ...and ignore those who are out to simply humiliate you and not interested in constructive, civil discussion !

Actually its cuz they are cheap there. nothing to do with manufacturing. my cousin bought a 46' 3d led samsung from Bangkok for 50k rs , while i bought the same model for 92 k here. .

His point is valid......we don't manufacture even low quality lcd's here,,,,,,,we just assemble the stuff

.
US should do more for India defense
Russia should do more, Israel shoud do more....but what should India do for herself
no country was ever able to become a super power by support of others. India and Pakistan together can become enough power if they stop fighting with each other then they can concentrate on the welfare of their people, but that will never happen and India quest to show Pakistan as their subservient country will get them to ruins as well.

That's the whole point. That east Asian countries are able to manufacture electronic goods a lot less price than India can, despite labour being cheaper in India. That has everything to do with manufacturing.

Why do you think the same thing costs almost twice in India than in Bangkok? Because our manufacturing sector is not competitive enough to give the same bang for buck.

India had better industrialize fast and drastically improve her manufacturing base, if she wants to stay competitive. 60% of the population working in subsistence farming is simply not an economic model that can succeed in the 21rst century. The time for that ended in the 19th century.

Off course , because we are not manufacturing it that's why it's so costly ...

Why same LED TV should otherwise cost less in developed country like Singapore ....

Do you know what is the contribution of electronic items import to current CAD ....it's huge !

We could save precious foreign exchange had we been able to manufacture such electronic goods within our country which aspires to be Super power ....

I absolutely agree with you. No self respecting country will depend on others to make itself progressive .
India should stop on expecting big countries to help it ....

Answer is.... Do it yourself !
