China and Vietnam have been engaged in a territorial dispute over the South China Sea. But Vietnam's leader visited Beijing last October.

He held talks with his Chinese counterpart and highlighted bilateral ties between the nations.

The United States regards China as its biggest competitor. It has also been strengthening ties with Vietnam.

The US president is scheduled to visit the capital and hold talks with the country's top leaders on Sunday. Biden will go there after he leaves India.

Vietnam is trying to strike a balance between the two superpowers by emphasizing its relations with China ahead of Biden's visit. Beijing and Hanoi have strong economic ties.

Counterpoint to this is that China currently occupy sizable chunks of Vietnam's territory. And has invaded despite being fellow communist nations. Allying with China also means Vietnam have to say goodbye to 90% of their EEZ alone.

It make more sense for Vietnam to align with the US.

If Vietnam prefers the US which is a cultural outsider, have a different political & economical system to them, fought war against them in the past even using chemical weapons. Over their neighbor china then you really need to ask what did China do to make Vietnam & in general almost all their neighbors hate them & love the US more?
