US imposes sanctions on LeT and JeM
Thursday, 04 Nov 2010

WASHINGTON: The United States imposed sanctions on two terrorist organizations on Thursday.

The Treasury Department said it targeted the financial and support networks of Laskhar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).

It also took action against LeT commander Azam Cheema, saying he had helped train operatives for the November 2008 Mumbai attacks and was the ‘mastermind’ behind the July 2006 Mumbai train bombings carried out by LeT.

The targets also included leaders of LeT and JeM, as well as al Rehmat Trust, an ‘operational front’ for JeM, the department said in a statement.

LeT already was designated as a foreign terrorist organization in December 2001, the department noted.

‘Today’s action, including the designation of Azam Cheema, one of LeT’s leading commanders who was involved in the 2008 and 2006 Mumbai attacks, is an important step in incapacitating the operational and financial networks of these deadly organizations,’ Stuart Levey, under secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, said in the statement.

The sanctions ban all transactions with US citizens and companies, and freezes any of the targets’ assets under US jurisdiction.

During obama's visit to india he will be commenting about Let and JeM.....

Lets see what he says...

.
Duh..!!!! It takes hardly 500 INR to order and get a new name plate to hang ouside the Muree Compound.

.
Old trick in politics...few sanctions before the visits.
The same Govt will be donating mllions in aid, which will end up with these same organistaions with different names.

.
Unless the U.S feels these organizations are a threat to U.S interests in afghanistan and elsewhere they would just turn a blind eye.India should forcefully negotiate to get the connections of these groups with official agencies of Pakistan, exposed and brought to task....

.
And no action against world biggest terrorist "company" blackwater ?

.
sanctions???

How are sanctions are going to affect they? they are a fringe organization not a country!

. .
I too have doubts on this sanction thing.. what exactly does it means.. Usually it suggests blocking of funds from foreign banks in case of an organisation... these organisations doesn't work in offices nor has any branches in US...

People of these organisation would be laughing hearing this US sanctions..

They accumulate funds in the guise of charity and other civilian aid,and many of their organization chiefs route their monetary assets through U.S banks ostentatiously for other innocuous purposes......a blanket freeze on their assets would go a long way in curbing their activities....

I dont think funds if any, is channeled through US banks....

They are not that plain stupid.

well funds are never declared openly .....a few year back the U.S found concrete evidence that the LTTE placed men covertly in the U.S mainland to raise funds for the Sri lankan civil war.

Terrorists use a highly scattered way of operating and transfering money.....for instance they use the Hundi system extensively in Pakistan, Afghanistan and the gulf to avoid any tracking of the transactions....

and there are middle eastern billionaire , sheikhs , other prominent men who donate to trusts and charities in developing countries , from which a portion of the money is routed to nefarious organizations ( with or without their knowledge ) ....a ban on all assets of anyone connected with LET or JEM as per U.S intelligence regardless of whether they were aware of the circumstances or not will go a long way in curbing terrorist attacks in our regions ......plug the finance of the extremists and we break their back.......

LTTE was a different scenario.. they had funds mainly from UK, where they had a considerable population of lankans who are infacct making good money. They have reached there as asylum seekers and started taking up shops and petrol stations and part of this money was channeled back home for the organisation.

LET and JEM assets can't be touched by the US without any help from Pakistan.

Sanctioning LET and JEM is tougher than sanctioning Al quieda.
