US helping Pakistan become stable, prosperous, democratic nation: Brian Heath

As inventive as that hypothesis is, it still does not follow from what you quoted above for Vietnam.

But at least one must grant points for ingenuity - it does take some brain power to turn the whole Jihadi / talibani / mujaheddin / arab spring hotchpotch into one about Vietnam. Though there were strong linkages to the cold war during the Afghan war.

not hypothesis - its the reality its the truth - and you are more than welcome to disagree -
I will elaborate on it further - US had faced its defeat at the hands of USSR in Vietnam - as Soviets had supported the rebels - US would noway allow that - As Iran and KSA are fighting their proxy war in Syria in the same way US and USSR fought theres in Vietnam - does it make sense now to you ???
and then US had to expand the theatre of War to Afghanistan ---

study the history, that might help you for once ---
I am trying to explain what brought US to this region to fight Soviets - Veitnam War, Nuclear arm race , Cold War - all had a role to play

.
Thanks, but no thanks. I dont like the idea, we have enough mess on our hands because of America already. Besides, america getting involved in another country's affair doesn't have a good record of a happy ending

USA came to Afghanistan to destroy OBL's group, plain and simple, after 9/11. That is all.

History keeps a log of events and its timeline.

What you would rather want me do is to study geo politics and theories and opinions about said historical events and their linkages.

Lol - nice Joke - Why dont you talk about pre 9/11, and mid 80s, or is that too hard for you to digest??

That was a very different war, which ended a long time ago. US forces in Afghanistan were a part of ISAF, which was all post 9/11.

No my dear its the same war its just a different thing, US decided to close its eyes for 10 years, and finally got kicked in the bottom --- US had already been part of this war- You have nothing to counter that ---so please continue with your assumptions

A gap of 10 years is long enough to clearly separate the two wars and their causes, the first related to the Russian invasion and no direct US involvement, and the second related to the 9/11 attacks by terrorists with sanctuary in Afghanistan. And neither had anything to do with Vietnam. These are not assumptions, either, but facts.

He means to say that the US involvement in Afghanistan (funding, arming and training the Mujahideen, AQ and other militant factions) during the Soviet invasion was a continuation of the USSR-US proxy war, which included Vietnam. He is right, the US did in fact support militant factions during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

Al Qaeda rose up partly because of the US funding. After Russia and the previous Afghan Government was gone, there was nothing left to stop factions like Al Qaeda and the Taliban, who were heavily armed and trained (Thanks to the US). This is what led to 9/11 and the subsequent US invasion.

So how are you going to connect all this with Vietnam?

The Vietnam war was part of the proxy war between US and USSR during the cold war.
The Communist forces the US was fighting in Vietnam were supported by the USSR, in the same way the militants the USSR was fighting in Afghanistan were supported by the US.

That is all fine, but after USSR collapsed soon after it withdrew from Afghanistan, ending the Cold War. What happened after 9/11 that led to the US invasion of Afghanistan was a totally different war.

Direct or No direct involvement, that doesnt even matter as long as they played their role as business as usual - that was US's biggest mistake because They thought the war was over but the War had actually started between AQ, US embassy bombing in 92, Pressure on KSA for inviting US forces during Gulf war - , all was a continuation of this Theatre of War in Afghanistan ---
