The United States has assisted Israel in developing a
hydrogen bomb, a move which violated international laws, a declassified
report by the US Department of Defense has revealed.According
to the 1987 report, top Israeli nuclear facilities were analogous to
the Los Alamos and Oak Ridge National Laboratories which played a key
role in the development of US nuclear weaponry. The 386-page
report, “Critical Technology Assessment in Israel and NATO Nations,”
shows that Israel’s nuclear sites had the technology base required to
design and produce nuclear weapons.Israelis are "developing the
kind of codes which will enable them to make hydrogen bombs. That is,
codes which detail fission and fusion processes on a microscopic and
macroscopic level,” said the report. The report came while Israeli
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is due to address the US Congress
next month to put further pressure on Iran to stop its peaceful nuclear
program. The report was released earlier this week after Grant
Smith, director of the Washington think tank Institute for Research:
Middle Eastern Policy, made a Freedom of Information Act request three
years ago.Smith also lodged a lawsuit in September, compelling the Pentagon to seriously address the request.
In
his federal court complaint, Smith outlined how the US failed to comply
with federal laws at the time that Israel was developing a nuclear
program."It's our basic position that in 1987 the Department of
Defense discovered that Israel had a nuclear weapons program, detailed
it and then has covered it up for 25 years in violation of the Symington
and Glenn amendments, costing taxpayers $86 billion,” said Smith during
a hearing before Judge Tanya Chutkan in US District Court for the
District of Columbia in late 2014.According to the authors of the
report, Edwin Townsley and Clarence Robinson, Israel possessed Category
1 capability pertaining to its anti-tactical ballistic missile and
“Star Wars” weapons programs.Israel has long defied calls to sign the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and is believed to have hundreds of nuclear warheads.
Admitted: US helped Israel build the Bomb
An official government document revealing the true extent of this ‘special relationship’ is now available for the world to see.
It surely would not have been possible for the Israelis to acquire the H-Bomb without American help, and now we know for sure that the US did indeed help – allegedly ‘skirting’ around strict international standards on the issue.
At present, much is being made by Republicans in the US Congress about Iran’s alleged (and still non existent) nuclear weapons program and “the rule of law”, so this latest revelation only their own belies grandiose platitudes on the issue.
The 386 page report, released as the American government ceded to a lawsuit, says that Israeli nuclear facilities are strikingly similar to those found in Los Alamos and Oak Ridge National Laboratories in the United States.
We hear that the “Symington Amendment to the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 prohibits most U.S. foreign aid to any country found trafficking in nuclear enrichment equipment or technology outside international safeguards”.
So now we have to ask, when will the prosecutions begin for this international WMD scandal?
