US: No Decision on Blocking Military Aid to Pakistan

Recent meeting of 1000s of Talibanis inside Quetta with no Pakistan action has greatly peeved Afghanis off and even left Uncle SAM shocked at the impunity.

Afghanistan seethes at Taliban meetings it says held in Pakistan
KABUL | BY JIBRAN AHMAD
World | Fri Aug 21, 2015 9:22am EDT

The new leader of the Taliban has met influential clerics seeking to heal a rift after the death of founder Mullah Omar, in the latest gathering to anger the Afghan government, which accuses Pakistan of allowing militants to meet on its territory.

Several key Taliban commanders pledged allegiance to Mullah Akhtar Mansour after his swift appointment to lead the armed Islamist movement in July, but other senior figures, including Omar's son, reject the way he was selected.

"These clerics tried to remove differences between Mansour and other Taliban members," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told Reuters, referring to Thursday's meeting. "They listened to each other's viewpoint, but didn't reach a conclusion."

Combined with a chill between the neighbors after Afghan President Ashraf Ghani indirectly blamed Pakistan for a spate of deadly bombings in Kabul, the leadership tussle has dashed short-term hopes of a new round of Taliban peace talks.

The council of clerics will rule in the next few days on whether Mansour should remain the Taliban's chief, said sources in the movement, who declined to be identified as the topic is sensitive.

Deeper rifts are likely if Mansour and his supporters decline to accept a negative outcome. He is also backed by Al-Qaeda and the powerful Haqqani network.

It took the clerics several days to track down Mansour, prompting them to warn his deputy that the delay threatened the movement's unity. Spokesman Mujahid blamed security concerns for Mansour's lack of response.

AFGHAN FURY

The Taliban is fighting a war against the Afghan government, which says Pakistan should do more to stop top leaders and supporters it believes are openly meeting around cities such as Quetta since Omar's death was announced last month.

"What would be the feeling of the people of Pakistan if the Pakistani Taliban held meetings in big cities of Afghanistan, such as Jalalabad?" asked foreign ministry spokesman Shakaib Mostaghni.

An Afghan delegation met Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif last week and gave him the names of specific sites where the Taliban leadership held meetings.

Pakistan says it believes the leadership councils have been meeting in Afghanistan.

Islamabad hosted a round of official Taliban peace talks last month, but a second round was canceled when news broke that the Taliban's unifying force, one-eyed leader Mullah Omar, had died two years earlier.

Violence has surged in Afghanistan since, as the Taliban seeks to show it remains a potent force.

This is how reporting is done, journalists quote sources in their articles, not everything is witnessed first hand. I will not decry any source based on their nationality.

Personal attacks however are not warranted. You are welcome to argue debate or criticize my post but since I have not passed any attacks on your person i suggest you refrain from doing the same.

Mods are welcome to take appropriate action against me I however have never ever cheer lead for likes of TTP/TTA whom i hate from the bottom of my heart. Everyone is welcome to check out my posting history

I suggest you mind your own business and find some other outlet for your pent up emotions.

Recent meeting of 1000s of Talibanis inside Quetta with no Pakistan action has greatly peeved Afghanis off and even left Uncle SAM shocked at the impunity.
Uncle Sam set up luxury residents for Afghan Taliban leaders in Qatar, facilitated their travel to China and Pakistan for talks, and has been pushing for Pakistan to encourage the AT to restart the peace process since it stopped.

The peace process is not going to re-start until the leadership struggle is largely over, so do you really thing the US and China are not in the loop when it comes to facilitating the leadership of the AT in conducting internal talks to settle the leadership question?

Appearances have to be maintained. Perception is often becomes reality. Election time, Indian Lobbyists and Diaspora, Afghanistan disenchantment, China - Tilt. Things start to add up.
I don't see US aid to Pakistan being an election issue, given that the US has taken an even bigger step by repeatedly stating that it supports peace talks and officially encouraging Pakistan to help bring the AT back to the peace talks.

I see this as possibly playing a larger role in the context of the Iran agreement, and Republican and pro-Israeli Democrat opposition to the Iran deal. There is the possibility that disbursement of CSF funds to Pakistan will be used as part of the propaganda of 'Barack Hussain Obama - making deals with Iran and Pakistan, blah, blah, blah' to scuttle any possibility of Congress approving the Iran deal.

Depends. Do you think Top Taiban commanders were unaware that Mullah Omar was dead and buried long ago and leadership question settled some time ago. Whatever is happening now is a mummer's farce for the benefit of International Audience.

Ofcourse US is in the loop and so is Pakistan and to an extent India and China but now that the cat is out of the bag, perceptions matter. Now no one can be seen to openly condone Taliban lest they forget the whole pretext of WoT was Osama and to an extent Taliban. So US has to maintain perceptions and as long as peace was the name of the game they could support Taliban Afghan reconciliation and role of Pakistan. Now that Afghans themselves are openly questioning Pakistan treatment of Taliban US can't seem to be seen taking their side.

As I have said, in real world perceptions hold a lot of weight and considering internal US dynamics w.r.t looming elections and hard liner republicans looking for any excuse to pounce on Hillary, Obama and company they have to tread carefully - A fact not lost on Afghans.

Edit: Just saw your second comment and I guess we are in agreement for the most part.

who cares. if i were pakistan pm, i would refuse all aid. why? it means you don't need to bend in to the donors favour. and you can make decisions thats suit, you not suit them. it will be painful and difficult. but wheres theres no pain there no gain.

If you think you can come to this forum and talk crap, you are sadly mistaken. You posting anti-Pakistan nonsense proves who is frustrated, and how much. This is NOT Bharat ratsh!t where we would be interested in your filth!!

Please take your sanctimonious crap, and shove it where the sun don't shine!

Ok, then US will have to give us more Military hardware for us to do more in this bloody war against rented terrorists. Pakistan should not miss this opportunity & a wish list should be given to US, that PD needs more F16's, more Zulus & so on.

There have been many speculations and reports regarding the recent review of the Coalition Support Fund (CSF) to Pakistan. We wanted to inform you that no decision has been made at this point. Since 2002, the U.S. government has delivered over $13Billion in CSF to Pakistan and it remains one of the largest recipients of U.S. Foreign Military Aid. U.S. and Pakistani Government are currently in discussion over how we will further support Pakistan’s fight against terrorism and regional instability beyond 2016, and have not taken future security assistance off the table.

As we have said before, Pakistan continues to be a significant defense ally for us in the region. We strongly support Pakistan’s ongoing counterterrorism efforts and acknowledge the sacrifices made by the Pakistani military’s servicemen.

If you were not already aware, our Commander, General Austin, visited GHQ Rawalpindi today to visit General Raheel Sharif.
