US AH-64D wins Indian Attack Chopper Deal , Mi-28N Looses: RIAN

This was simply a Political decision. It is very evident that our ruling babus got some goodies from Boeing. IN terms of technical fronts, there are many fronts that are mandated in both the contended in first place so that contenders are at a parallel level. The only reason why AH-64 is chosen is because US got kicked out of MRCA and this has NOTHING to do with technical requirements.

Apache's good reputation as a gunship from world over is just an added bonus to this. It was simply a political move.

Hell no! We don't want to be hung by our nuts on political decisions. The whole reason why Apache won this is because MRCA was lost by US. This is the only reason. Political. Outside MRCA buying SH is madness because this isn't potatoes and onions we're buying. We need money to manage all diverse fleets.

Mark my words; IAF will go for a uniform fleet and it certainly won't be American.
Why political?

Apache has radar, Mi-28s radar is still in development.
Apache has more power/weight ratio, which is very important in mountain areas.
Apache has fire and firget anti tank missiles, Mi-28 does not.
Apache has more range.
Overall Apache is much more mature battle proven system.

Any further news on this regarding when these dragonfly's will start arriving?

According to this Apache didn't win, its Mi-28 which dropped out, leaving Apache as the sole contendor.

Apache Block III Remain Final Choice for Indian Army | Defense Update
Russian candidate for the Indian Army procurement of 22 attack helicopter, has not met Indian requirements and has dropped from the competition, leaving the Boeing AH-64D Apache Block III the only competitor. According to the agency’s Russian sources the Russian Mi-28N ‘Night Hunter’ failed in meeting 20 criteria, mostly on technical ground and maturity issues involving its sensors and combat systems integration.

While this may pave the way for New Delhi to select the Apache, being left as a sole bidder could actually delay the process of ordering the U.S. helicopter since sole bidder programs are extensively regulated under new anti-corruption policies.

Probably still a while till this deal gets finalized.

NIce Good News for indian army at last they got some thing they can use lol

Now Pakistani CObra and indian apache

The Apache was more capable, but the difference has been blurred with newer model Cobras. The Cobra was much cheaper, though less sophisticated and takes up much less room on the deck of a ship.

The Current Longbow apache has an all weather long range detection and attack suite that the cobra can't match. (ie MMW radar plus 2nd gen TI).

The Commanche comes in two models a gunship and a scout. It is most use as a scout and will be used with AH-64Ds rather than replacing them.

Having said that from what I have heard of Israeli pilots they prefer the Cobra to the Apache. The Cobra is a much smaller target and can carry similar weapons and engage targets with comparable ability. (ie from 3km both can put a ATGM through a window or hit a moving car at night... the Cobra does it much more cheaply.)

The Apache has a reputation of being a bit of a hanger Queen... a bit maintainence heavy and expensive to run and buy. It is certainly the more capable of the two though the difference has closed with the new model of the cobra. The Main advantage of the Apache is MMW Radar, and a relatively powerful gun optimised for air to ground work, plus more and better avionics and night flying aides. The Cobra is almost as capable and cheaper to buy and use and is ship ready.

Self satisfaction much??

OT-Whoz gonna use it IA or IAF??

. .
Its for IAF.. IA has to be satisfied with rudras and LCH.

IAF using attack copters?? It would make more sense if IA is using it. Or is it like owned by IA but maintained and flew by IAF and is available to the IA at any time.

. .
Land based rotary aircraft should all be under the under the control of Army.

. .
I predicted Apache last week while most went with Mi-28.
Well, you were comparing apples and oranges! ;) It was clear as day that the Apache with its Hellfires would win hands down! One needn't have been a rocket scientist to have figured that out!!

Cheers!

. .
it takes 2 years to be trained on these birds- a point that has to be noted. I'm happy it got chosen all the same.
