After 2 years of cultivating a strongman image, and telling the country that he could singlehandedly tame and humiliate Pakistan, he has this attack by Kashmiri freedom fighters during an extremely critical period. Now there're two paths Modi takes. Two directions India can go after this episode.

One is the commonly trodden path of shedding the 'rising shining superpower' image, toning down the Balochistan rhetoric, and go back to pretending to be the peaceful and helpless state which needs the international community's help against evil terrorist Pakistan.

The other is chest-thumping and escalation.

One will hurt Modi's image, the other will hurt the stability of the region. We'll see what Modi chooses.

I could understand if someone said Burhan Wani's killing has brought some people on the streets to throw stones but planning and attacking a military base is no child's play. Anyone with knowledge of how these things work know that such incidents don't happen spontaneously and requires meticulous planning and execution.

If Pakistan is not involved then it is more worrisome. It is relatively easy to confront a known enemy than an unknown one. That is more the reason for India and Pakistan to continue the talks to eliminate the 3rd party angle from both the incidents taking place in both India and Pakistan... Who benefits the most from the India-Pakistan animosity and who looses the most from an India-Pakistan détente..

That is true though. Pakistan has much too lose in terms of executing an attack on base like that. it will justfy and give every reason to indian establishment to crackdown on those separatist it will further reinforce indian stance on kashmir. So I hihgly doubt Pakistan would fire on its foot. Although A US possibility cannot be ruled out for obvious reasons. US is trying hard for India. The recent sabotage sorepene class subs, has its own reason. And then the offer of F-16 line. The more they get foothold in India the more you will see internal uprising
