***Upgradation of T-72 tanks begins in Jaisalmer***

Well, the T-90 is basically a highly evolved version of the T-72. Even though the T-90S is basically a downgraded version, it is still a decent tank.

I think we should order 500-600 more Arjun mk2 because induction of further t90s will also take time and after fmbt gets ready it will take at-least a decade to replace these tin boxes. I highly doubt that these boxes can work more than a decade after up-gradation. Wise decision will be to slowly and continuously replace the fleet. We should not upgrade the oldest batches of t72 and replace them with Arjun mk2...

I guess arjun mkII will be inducted in large number. 1000 Mk2 + 2000 t90 will be ideal in 2020 timeline.

Well I dont know much about tank warfare or ground systems...but what i can figure out is army is really stuck with the Logistics. Remember an army that has been fighting with medium tanks for the past 4 decades to suddenly adapt to a heavier tank. The Russian and Western principle of tank warfare was totally different. The Russian tanks always employ scathing attacks and hit and Run principle. But the Western tanks were designed in such a way that they can take hits and stand and fight.

It is all Dependent on the DGMF and the DGMO what kind of battles they want to fight. Earlier the Generals thought that having an AC will make the soldiers inside sleep but now that is changed. That is why the second batch of the T 90 has AC and the first batch did not. Time will come when we will actually understand the advantages of Arjun and the T 90 and use them in tandem in the battlefield.

Indian army really likes its t 72, despite having the option to replace it they chose to upgrade them...... the upgraded ones are as effective as al khalid.... and any army needs to have a high low combo..... with 1600 t90s and 248 arjun mk1 (+around 500 mk2 hopefully - we'll find out next year) forming the high end and 1900 t 72 ajeya mk2 forming the low end....
total 4248 tanks which is still less than the sanctioned strength of 5000 tanks( according to wiki ) so we still need more tanks

T 72 will remain in fleet till FMBT enters service in large numbers , ie something like 600-800 in service
Thats coz we will need a large tank inventory to be capable of faceoff against PLA

We dont need tanks in large numbers to fight against the PLA, the terrain with china is mountainous. not tank country at all. Tanks can only be used against Pakistan and to a limited degree against Bangladesh. Against China, the ladakh plateau is the only possible theatre for tank operations

i guess rest 752 will be DRDO light tanks.

Fan boy....... indian army cant the whole fleet of t-72...its indian army not the US marines!

Also how will it be effectives as AK? when even the basic AK beats ur arjun and t-90 hands down on specs!

Oh come on!Stop this now.It was the army who fixed the GSQR and submitted to DRDO.So it's their duty to build all the necessary infrastructures and logistics for Arjun tanks. So what the Arjun is heavier? It's ground pressure is much lower even from the 38 ton T55s.So movement is even easier than the russian rustbuckets.'The army has operated medium tanks for long' is not a valid reason to use the tin cans.We have to realise in today's war T 90s/70s can't survive and they don't pack the punch to pulverise the enemy at first place.Indian Army's elite strike corps are designed for blitzkreig operations for which Arjuns with their near impenetrable armor, speed and heavy firepower fits perfectly, not the russian rustbuckets.

I guess the recent order of C-17 will change this- 1 C-17= 1 MBT/2 T-72/90. So if IAF inducts 25 (projected figure, current order is 10) then that is almost an entire SQD of MBT quickly transported anywhere even China.

There is a limit to the extent of superiority you can develop over the enemy. As of now, by 2014 once the T-72 upgrade is completed, Indian armour will be strong enough to deal with Pak.

2nd line tanks:
1950 relatively new, full upgraded T-72 against 1500 T-55/Al Zarrar/T-85
1.3 times numbers, 1 generation newer (and much stronger 1000hp engines after the upgrade)
Note that by 2014 we will not be using the T-55 at all, unlike Pakistan

1st Line tanks:
248 Arjun + 900-1000 odd T-90 against 320 t-80u, 400 AK, maybe 100-200 AK2
So 1.3 times numbers, Arjun well superior to anything they can throw, T-90 as good or better

We would be even better off if we had ordered more Arjuns and the T-90s had arrived on time, but still its not armour we need to be worried about, its the artillery where for various reasons India has always been inferior

Army to spend billions on outdated T-72 tanks! -  National News
cost of t 72 upgrade - 14 crore each, cost of arjun mk 1- 16.8 crore....... if we had ordered large number of arjuns cost would also have gone down to nearly the same, so yes we did have option.
look up the specs of upgraded t 72 mk2 - 125mm smooth bore - same as ak
composite armor,RHA, ERA - both have it
fcs, night fighting capability - both have it
if the ak has an advantage - its not a large one
and please dont embarrass your own tank by comparing it to t 90 and arjun

Lol what a comparison!

all the modern tanks have either a 120mm gun or 125mm
Fcs,night visions,era,rha.

But does it have a upgraded awesome gun like AK,can it fire missiles? does it have IMBS?does it have protection systems like RAHBAR n VARTA-1?etc etc among other systems......

Ur just a fan boy embarassing urself.....

On specs AK beats ur finest t-90 bhisma n arjun.

Guys I wonder why the defence journos are reporting that the order for 124 additional tanks are for mk2 when it is for mk1?The order was placed right after the comparative trials when mk2 was not finalised.Even DRDO has stated that these new tanks will not come with LAHAT missiles indicating they are mk1s.The order for mk2 is recently placed which will be inducted from 2013 onwards. The ealier order was for mk1 to keep the HVF Avadi running till Mk2 becomes ready for production.
So there are 124 mk1s in service,124 mk1s and 124 mk2s in order.
REGARDS....

Because they are Indian journos. They are quick to criticize the Army but don't want/try to find their faults.
