Up to 70 injured in attack near Afghan NATO base - FOCUS Information Agency

Kabul. A powerful suicide truck bomb exploded near the entrance to a NATO base on Friday, injuring as many as 70 people, mainly civilians, south of the Afghan capital Kabul, officials said, cited by AFP.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in Muhammad Agha district of Logar province which took place at around 8:00am (0330 GMT) Friday.
The blast could be heard for several kilometres (miles), an AFP reporter in the area said.
Logar's health director, Mohammad Zarif Nayebkhail, told AFP that up to 70 people were taken to hospital with injuries from shrapnel or flying glass.
"Up to 70 wounded have been taken to the main hospital in the district -- seven of them are (Afghan) security guards of NATO, the rest are civilians," he said. "Several of the wounded were in a serious condition."
Logar's deputy police chief Mohammad Abed described the blast as "huge."
"The suicide attacker wanted to ram his explosive-laden vehicle into the coalition forces base but he was stopped at the gate and detonated the truck outside the base," he said.
He put the provisional toll of those injured at five -- three police and two NDS (Afghan intelligence) personnel -- adding that some houses had been destroyed by the blast.
A spokesman for NATO's US-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) confirmed a car bombing in the district but said they were still "gathering information".
He could not confirm that ISAF was the target or the number of casualties.
In September, 77 US troops were wounded in a truck bombing which targeted a NATO base in Wardak province, which neighbours Logar.
US officials blamed the attack on the Haqqani network, an Afghan Taliban faction whose leaders are based in Pakistan's northwestern tribal belt.
Civilians are increasingly caught up in the Afghan war.
The United Nations says that civilian deaths in the first half of this year rose by 15 percent to 1,462, with insurgents responsible for 80 percent.
There are currently 140,000 international troops in Afghanistan fighting a decade-long, Taliban-led insurgency alongside Afghan government forces.
Foreign combat troops are due to leave by the end of 2014 but a substantial presence is expected to remain to train Afghan security forces.

Best wishes for the civilians.

Regarding the Afghan security guards of NATO, I for once would like to say that this is perhaps the best thing the Taliban have done in the last 10 years!!

What goes around, comes around, my dear Afghan warlords!!!!!

I hope Taliban don't claim this as a revenge for the killing of Pakistani soldiers. Loss is a loss specially civilian since civilians always become the causality of war of the like the americans put it collateral damage. But had this been the US or NATO soldiers, i personally would have rejoiced their killings.

civilians died again :((( Taliban and Nato terrorist once again are winners

.
Targetting US/NATO mercenaries is justified(according to some, but not according to me.!!) .. But missing that target and killing civilians instead.?!!!  No one but the civilians are paying the highest price here..!! NATO/US troops are safe and sound in their bunkers..!!

America needs to leave afghanistan now. Any loss of life is sad but cant help thinking in the case of americans and their afghani supporters after our loss what comes around goes around or what you sow you reap

What if the Taliban swear revenge, for 24 Pakistani soldiers ?

we know the the Army is not very keen to fight Muslims,

If Taliban make this gesture, This war will take a VERY favorable turn very very quickly.

this is sad afghan civilians are dead wounded

my condolences but the nato and usa cannot even secure kabul

and also terrorist are inside afghanistan i mean most of them blaming pakistan wont work for this

Pakistan is doing all it can it military is already stretched out

saying that Pakistan is supporting terror activity is the dumbest thing like Afghanistan and USA NATO always says

IF Pakistan wanted and supported terror activity then terrorist would have been more advance and used Chemical / biological and nuclear weapons

I would have rejoiced if they were killing NATO troops as freedom fighters ... But this collateral damage is ridiculous ...
