Featured Ukraine to supply engines for Turkish next-generation cruise missile

Ukraine will supply advanced missile engines to Turkey, for new cruise missile with deep-strike capability.

The news agency Defense Express, quoting the ProZorro public procurement platform, reported that SE Ivchenko-Progress signed a number of contracts for the purchase of cutting-edge aircraft engine components for the new AI-35 turbojet engines that will equip new Turkish cruise missiles

SE Ivchenko-Progress designed the AI-35 engine family to power high-speed unmanned aircraft systems and advanced cruise missiles.

According to the news agency, the AI-35 engines should be delivered to Turkey, where they are going to be used in the production of new cruise missiles. Relevant information, in December last year, during a visit to the enterprise of the former Minister of Economy, Trade and Agriculture of Ukraine Tymofiy Milovanov, said the director of the enterprise Igor Kravchenko.

“We make AI-35 for the Turks. This is for a cruise missile. Now we have a contract signed for this engine,” said the director of Ivchenko-Progress during the presentation of new projects.

Currently, Turkey is developing a new cruise missile under the Gezgin program. Information from the open sources has indicated that new missiles will be similar to U.S.-made Tomahawk and will have a modular design.

The Gezgin project is designed to develop conventional long-range strike capabilities for naval platforms. This new missile is thought to have a range capability of approximately 1,000 kilometers.

Since when uses the JL-8/K-8 that engine?? From all i know it uses an Ukrainian AI-25TLK turbofan (or a locally licenced WS-11.

Otherwise this decision might be a rationale one, it again questions Turkeys ability to develop a turbofan for the TFX when it has to import a much smaller and less complex one for a cruise missile.

Thank you as I had made that point many times to Turkish posters about the TFX being hampered due to lack of local engine.

Turks may just about manage a 4th gen engine by the mid-2030s but if they want a true next-gen engine then they will need to partner with countries like the UK as USA is out of the question now. Russia may also be available and they could co-develop an engine based on the one being tested for the SU-57 but the Russian engine would have poor reliability and lifespan compared to a Western one.

Impressive if the range does indeed turn out to be 1,000 KM.
You can squeeze a lot more performance out of a turbine engine if you know that it's disposable after a few hours.

Up until the last generation of figher jet engines, and equivalent disposable turbofan was outperforming its non-disposable analogue.

Russia is again out of question. They are on verge of war in Syria issue.

This is Turbojet engine, that Turkey already produce for SOM missiles, KTJ3200 to replace TR40 French engine. Turkey's just don't find it suitable to spend lots of money to make a bigger Turbojet, where you will not be able to sell it other countries, as its range pass 300 km.

Turkiye has ability to develop all kinds of engines for Cruise Missiles , UCAVs , Helicopters and Fighter Jets but needs more time 10-12 years

indigenous new generation turbofan Engine will be ready in 2030s .. but Turkiye urgently needs engine for GEZGIN Cruise Missile

In the turbojet configuration of the TS1400 the core Engine can also be converted to turbofan configuration by adding a fan and additional shafts and bearings to the front side and a power turbine to the rear side

The core technology of the TS1400 Engine shall also form the basis for the indigenous turbofan engine (in 8,500lbf to 9,500lbf thrust class) needed for the Turkish projects

This could be an offset deal for the TB2 UAV sale to Ukraine. E.g., Turkey bought Super Mushshak from Pakistan. It didn't mean it couldn't develop a similar plane, rather, it was the trade-off for the MILGEM and T129 sales.
